In the front left corner of Mr. Steven Etcher’s desk sits a photo that captures a moment in time, one that resonates deeply with his second-grade students. The picture shows a young Steven Etcher on his first day of kindergarten at Kingsley Elementary School, sitting on the hallway floor, overwhelmed by the challenges of starting school.
Today, that photograph is a powerful reminder that even the toughest beginnings can lead to the most meaningful journeys. Now, in his second year of teaching at Kingsley Elementary, Mr. Etcher proudly tells his students that he was once in their shoes—walking the same halls and facing the same challenges.
Mr. Etcher is one of many DCSD employees who are alums of the District. Today, DCSD is launching its I Am DeKalb Made campaign to celebrate its alumni. Alumni play a crucial role in the success and growth of DCSD, which has a long history dating back to its establishment in 1873. We’re celebrating the incredible impact of our DeKalb alumni—leaders, innovators, and change makers—through our new #DeKalbMade feature video and story series! Veteran Social Worker Honoredas Social Worker of the Year |

Don Wessels, a social worker with the DeKalb County School District (DCSD), is described by his peers as friendly, calm, hardworking, a leader, and a mentor. With a distinguished three-decade career, Mr. Wessels was recently honored as DCSD’s School Social Worker of the Year, which he received with love, appreciation, and gratitude from his colleagues.
The DCSD School Social Worker Department gives the award, which is determined by votes from department members during the nationally recognized School Social Work Week each March. The week culminated in a luncheon, where Mr. Wessels was announced as the recipient of this prestigious award for the year. |

The Pre-K lottery application window is closing on Friday, March 21. DCSD is honored to offer 126 lottery funded Georgia Pre-Kindergarten Program classes in 76 sites throughout the district. The Pre-Kindergarten program is funded by the Georgia State Lottery, governed by Bright from the Start. |
