Library Media Assistant Named Educational Support Professional I of the Year for Illuminating Minds and Empowering Education
Jackie Ray-Davis has always loved books for as long as she can remember. That enthusiasm, and her experience of going to the library as a child, led her to a thoroughly rewarding career in library media and recognition as the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) 2022–2023 Educational Support Professional I of the Year, which was announced at the District’s 9th Annual Academy of Educational Excellence Awards in February.
“I am humbled by being chosen for this incredible honor,” she said. “I feel appreciated, valued, and so very proud.”
A DCSD veteran of 25 years, Ms. Ray-Davis has served as the library media assistant at Edward L. Bouie, Sr. Traditional Theme School for nearly seven years. Ray-Davis has always been an avid reader— studying any genre.
“While in the classroom, I always made sure to schedule library visits,” she said. “To this day, I love reading aloud to children, doing voice changes according to the characters. Books are my love language.”
Students and colleagues have congratulated her since her selection. On May 12, the school celebrated Ms. Ray-Davis and the school’s Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Professional II of the Year with staff and their family and friends.
“The theme of the event was Chanel and Sneaks because I love sneakers,” said Ms. Ray-Davis.
Being a library media assistant has positively impacted Ms. Ray-Davis in many ways. She feels capable and helpful; her job has helped improve her technology skills.
“With the world revolving around technology, I had to learn new skills to keep the library resourceful in that way,” she said.
Ms. Ray-Davis said the best part of working at Edward L. Bouie, Sr. Traditional Theme School is the ability to grow.
“This school challenges me. I have been trusted with tasks and responsibilities that made me realize the administrative team trusts and values my presence, skills, and expertise,” she said. “I truly feel needed and appreciated.”
Ms. Ray-Davis said she would like her legacy to reflect a life-long learning journey filled with acts of kindness, hard work, perseverance, and love for children living and learning to the beat of their own drum.
