Amazon Delivers Big Time!
Five DeKalb County School District students were among 400 Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship recipients to receive a $40,000 scholarship each over four years to pursue computer science or engineering degrees at the college or university of their choice this fall.
The students were surprised with the scholarships on April 18, 2023, during an event at the Junior Achievement Chick-Fil-A Discovery Center in Atlanta. After their first year of college, they will also receive a paid internship offer at the company to gain hands-on, practical work experience with mentorship from Amazon leaders.
The 2023 Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship recipients are:
- Daniellange Auguste Arabia Mountain High School
- Toni Dismuke Arabia Mountain High School
- Isaiah Fleming Arabia Mountain High School
- Bryan Shook Lakeside High School
- Abraham Alemu Tucker High School
“I’m very excited. I knew something was up but didn’t know what it was. I’m excited to be presented with this opportunity,” said Toni Dismuke. “This $40,000 is going to be very pivotal for my education. My parents won’t have to pay for my college education. This is a burden off their backs.”
The Amazon Future Engineer program is a childhood-to-career initiative designed to inspire and educate millions of students each year from underrepresented and historically underserved communities, to build life-changing skills that leverage computer science and coding, bringing their dreams to life. Recipients were chosen based on various criteria, including academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, work experience, future goals, and financial need. Amazon partnered with Scholarship America to review the applications and select 400 scholars.
“Congratulations to each award-winning scholar, especially our DSCD winners,” said Dr. Vasanne S. Tinsley, DCSD Interim Superintendent. “I am confident that the Amazon Future Engineer program will realize a great return on their investment in each of you. I am excited for you and what your futures hold. Continue to work hard, and soar as you pursue your chosen STEM-focused career path. Your futures are bright. On behalf of the DeKalb County School District, I thank Amazon for its support of and commitment to our students, staff, and community.”
Amazon Future Engineer will continue working with DCSD and other educational partners to support local elementary, middle, and high schools with high-quality computer science courses, teacher professional development, and real-world career exploration learning experiences for thousands of students across the state.
Amazon launched the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship program in 2019, awarding hundreds of students annually with $40,000 over four years to pursue an undergraduate degree in computer science and paid internship offers at Amazon. This year, Amazon committed $16 million in paid tuition. Amazon Future Engineer has awarded $38 million in scholarships to 950 students from underserved and historically underrepresented communities across the U.S. since the program’s inception.
