DeKalb County School District’s Students Show Improvements

The DeKalb County School District’s (DCSD) students showed improved proficiency rates on the most recent Georgia Milestones mathematics test results, released today. The results for English, Science, and Social Studies were previously released in July.

“Every milestone we reach is evidence of our combined commitment and perseverance,” said Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton. “As we strive for New Levels and New Heights this school year, we will continue to closely analyze our data, implement effective instructional strategies, and maintain engaging learning environments where every student can thrive.”

DCSD students performed better than the previous year on six (6) assessments: five (5) end-of-grade and one End-Of-Course assessment. DCSD’s results kept pace with the state’s overall improvement in the number of assessments where students achieved Proficient and Distinguished Learner status compared to the previous year.

Five out of the six grade levels (83.3%) showed improvement in students scoring Proficient and Distinguished Learner. The most notable improvements were in 8th grade, with an increase of 5.5% over the prior year, and in 5th grade, with a 5.2% increase from 2023 to 2024. The only grade level demonstrating lower proficiency was 3rd grade, with a decrease of 1.7%.

The combined winter and spring administrations of the Algebra: Concepts and Connections end-of-course assessment showed improvements compared to the previous year’s math assessments. In 2023, 21.9% of students were Proficient and Above in Coordinate Algebra and 14.3% in the Algebra assessment. In 2024, the percentage of students who were Proficient and Above increased to 24.2% on the new state Algebra: Concepts and Connections assessment, which serves as the baseline data for Georgia Milestones 2024.

DCSD results outpaced the State with more EOG and EOC assessments, making gains in Developing, Proficient, and Distinguished Learner over the prior year. DCSD had seven (7) assessments that increased performance compared to the state’s six (6) assessments.

All six grade levels showed improvement in students scoring at the Developing, Proficient, and Distinguished Learner levels. The most notable improvements were in 8th grade, with a 9.0% increase over the prior year, and in 5th grade, with a 7.8% increase from 2023 to 2024.

The results of the winter and spring Algebra: Concepts and Connections end-of-course assessments for both 2023 and 2024 showed improvements compared to the previous year’s math assessments. In 2023, the percentage of students scoring Developing and Above was 51.9% for Coordinate Algebra and 33.3% for the Algebra assessment. In 2024, the percentage of students scoring Developing and Above on the new state Algebra: Concepts and Connections assessment was 52.1%.
