The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) students, teachers, staff and community members celebrated the official groundbreaking of Cross Keys North Elementary School on May 21, 2019.
The event featured remarks from DCSD Superintendent/CEO Dr. R. Stephen Green, Doraville mayor Donna Pittman, Dresden Elementary principal Dr. Jesse Berger, Region 1 Superintendent Dr. Sherry Johnson, as well as DeKalb County Board of Education members Allyson Gevertz and Vickie Turner. Board of Education member, Dijion Dacosta, was also in attendance.
“I am so proud that we are here at this moment,” said DCSD Superintendent/CEO R. Stephen Green. “The milestone that we’re reaching right now in breaking new ground for a brand new elementary school here in Doraville, here in the Cross Keys area, is an important milestone for the future of DeKalb County School District. We remain committed and devoted to addressing [overcrowding] and to building a brand new state-of-the-art facility here.”
Cross Keys North Elementary, which will be located at 3630 Shallowford Road in Doraville, shares Fernbank Elementary and Barack H. Obama Elementary Magnet School of Technology’s new, state-of-the-art design, which features collaborative learning spaces, flexible fixtures to suit student needs, and improved security measures.
“This school will say to our children, we care and we want the best for each and every one of our kids,” said Doraville mayor Donna Pittman. “We pledge that Doraville will continue to be a partner with street improvements, tree plantings and our police to keep our schools safe.”
Attendees enjoyed an inspirational poem from two students at Cary Reynolds Elementary and Huntley Hills Elementary. The Dresden Elementary Diamonds dance team also performed.
“As a board member, I’ve been thrilled with how well the city and the school district have worked together on this school,” said Board of Education member Allyson Gevertz.
