High school football playoff positioning continues with two all-DeKalb clashes topping a list of just five games in DeKalb this weekend.
The 24th meeting between the Southwest DeKalb Panthers (4-3, 3-2) and Tucker Tigers (5-1, 4-0) counts as a region game for the first time since the 2013 season in a series Tucker leads 16-7-1 including wins the past two seasons. Southwest DeKalb won the 2021 meeting to break a five-game streak by the Tigers in the series that dates to 1966.
The two teams bring in a pair of sophomore quarterbacks in the Panthers’ Braylon Carter (79 of 111, 4 INT, 1357 yards, 20 TDs) and Tucker’s Jace German (62 of 117, 1 INT, 826 yards, 14 TDs) to direct the offenses against two of the Top 5 defense in the county as both allow under 200 yards of offense per game.
Both teams’ ground attack is spread out between several backs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm at Adams Stadium with Tucker hosting homecoming in the Region 5-4A matchup.
The other all-DeKalb region meeting involves the Miller Grove Wolverines (4-3, 1-0) and Columbia Eagles (1-6, 1-0) at 7:30 pm at Hallford Stadium in what could determine the who gets the No. 1 seed in Region 6-2A.
The duo of quarterback Thomas Winston IV and Nashaun Porter led the Miller Grove offense. Winston had three touchdown passes and Porter ran for over 100 yards and two scores in a 41-6 win over Redan in the team’s region opener. Columbia got a big game from quarterback Cameron Graves as he rushed for 173 yards and four touchdowns threw for two more in the 56-15 win over South Atlanta.
The week opens Wednesday night as the Chamblee Bulldogs (1-5, 1-2) travel to Gwinnett County to take on Shiloh (0-6, 0-3) in a 7:00 pm Region 4-5A contest rescheduled from the Hurricane Helene weather. Chamblee is coming off a heart-stopping 23-21 region win over the Lakeside Vikings last week as they held off a late Viking charge after going up 23-0 at the half.
