The Chamblee Bulldogs scored 50.5 points on the first day of competition and cruised to a 76.5-46 win over the Henderson Cougars to win their second DeKalb County Middle School Track Championships title in three years at Godfrey Stadium earlier this week.
Chamblee placed 18 times in the Top 8 led by the big opening day outburst. Ellison Ely and Jah Emner both tied the triple jump record of 37-11.00 set by Davion Terry of Cedar Grove during the 2022 championships to finish one-two in the competition. Ely got the nod with less attempts to take the gold and Emner claimed the silver to give the Bulldogs 18 points in the event.
Harrison Jones and Caleb Tate finished second (41-01.00) and third (40-07.00), respectively, in the shot put adding 14 more points to the first day total.
The Bulldogs also got nine points as Jaylon Pierson finished third in the long jump (17-06.75) and Maurice Sikes finished in a tie for fifth. Another nine points came from Aaron Crabbe (fourth) and Eli Cranman (fifth) in the 1600-meter run.
Elijah Anderson’s third place finish in the 100-meter hurdles along with a fifth place finish from Ethan Brachman, the meet’s Most Valuable Performer, all but sealed the title for the Bulldogs as runner-up Henderson (46) and third place Lithonia (41) would not get any closer throughout the remainder of the meet.
Henderson put together eight Top 8 finishes led by a gold medal in the 4×200-meter relay (1:38.46) and silver medals from Khoi Nguyen in the 1600-meter run (5:24.98) and the 4×800-meter relay (9:48.80).
Lithonia picked up five Top 8 Finishes led by gold medals by Anthony Flourny in the 100-meter dash (11.57) and Timothy Behing in the first running of the 100-meter hurdles (15.14). The Bulldogs also claimed silver medals in both the 4×100-meter relay (47.59) and the 4×200-meter relay (1:38.91).
Caleb Brown led the McNair charge into fourth place as he won the long jump (18-02.00) and finished third in the triple jump (34-09.00). Jacobi Johnson added a silver in the 100-meter hurdles (15.44) and Jaylen Alexander also finished second in the 800-meter run (2:18.11).
Freedom claimed fifth place overall with six Top 8 finishes in the meet. Jononxe Clayton topped the Rams performance taking second in both the 100-meter (11.65) and 200-meter (23.987) dashes in two tight races. Freedom finished with bronze medals in both the 4×100-meter (47.93) and 4×200-meter (1:39.88) relays.
Redan finished sixth in the team standings led by Larry Stewart’s victory in the shot put (48-01.00) as the Raiders finished with seven Top 8 finishes. James Griffen carted home a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash (24.29).
Champion picked up most of its seventh-place 31 points by taking the titles in the 4×100-meter (47.07) and the 4×400-meter (3:49.73) relays.
Peachtree claimed two of the remaining five gold medals led by Lawson Conner in the 800-meter run (2:14.35) and the 4×800-meter relay team (9:34.84).
Other gold medal winners included Cedar Grove’s Robert Jones (23.983) in a close 200-meter dash victory, Bethune’s Dmitrious Brown (54.63) in the 400-meter dash and Beacon Hill’s Kellan Gure (5:21.63) in the 1600-meter run.
The Bulldogs’ title was their second in three years and coupled with the Lady Bulldogs win on the girls’ side gave Chamblee a sweep of the meet for the second time in three years. Chamblee is the first school to complete the sweep twice. Tucker (2015) and Henderson (2008) are the other schools to sweep.
Chamblee Coach Terrance Jett was named Coach of the Year.
