The GHSA Traditional State Wrestling Championships open today in Macon including 33 wrestlers from various DeKalb County high schools on a quest for state titles.
Class 5A opened this morning while the rest of the classifications and the girls get started this afternoon.
Three wrestlers from Tucker and one from Arabia Mountain are the first to hit the mats today as DeKalb just four qualify in the classification. Arabia Mountain’s Langston Blakely (175) was runner-up in the Sectional.
Twelve wrestlers qualified in Class 4A from Southwest DeKalb (5), Stephenson (3), Druid Hills (2), Miller Grove (1) and Stone Mountain (1). Included in the group is defending state champ Isaiah Scott from Southwest DeKalb who won his sectional qualifying matches in impressive fashion. Several Sectional runners-up include Deonte Smith (120) of Druid Hills, EhteeKaw Soe (150) of Druid Hills and Amir Ferguson (285) of Southwest DeKalb.
Dunwoody has the most team members participating as the Wildcats put seven through the Sectional to make the state championships.
Columbia led the way in Class 2A with three wrestlers qualifying from the Sectional including runners-up Mickel Huerta (120) and Thawbaan As-Siddiq (144). Towers’ John Griffin (138) also finished as a runner-up as did McNair’s Glenn Simmons (150).
DeKalb’s three girls’ qualifiers all finished in the top two at Sectional led by Southwest DeKalb’s Ayla Evans (235) who was the top qualifier in her class. Stone Mountain’s Say Paw (110) and Arabia Mountain’s Aniya McIver (155) were both runners-up in their class.
