Stephenson senior Nyla Loyd continues to set marks for the Stephenson gymnastics team becoming the first Jaguar to qualify for the GHSA Lucia Norwood State Gymnastics Championships with her performance in the preliminary meet this past Wednesday.
Loyd placed in the Top 10 in four of the five competitions at the Preliminary State Meet. Loyd finished fifth overall in the All-Around qualifying with a score of 36.500, 1.75 points behind the top score.
She was fourth on the floor (9.500), sixth on the beam (9.125) and seventh on the vault (9.125). She finished 21st overall on the uneven bars (8.300).
The Stephenson senior starts competition on Friday at Buford at 5:00 pm on Friday (April 21).
Loyd became the first Stephenson competitor to win a gold medal (4) in the DeKalb County Championships with her All-Around title in this year’s competition. She also won the beam (8.700), floor (9.425) and vault (9.000) gold medals. She finished with a silver medal in the uneven bars (8.350).
Chamblee’s Sarah Wolf came up short of qualifying for the state championships. Her best performance was in the uneven bars (8.950) coming up just short (0.050) of qualifying in the event. She was 12th in the All-Around (34.525), 17th in the floor (8.950), tied for 18th in the vault (8.650) and tied for 28th in the beam (7.975).
Dunwoody’s Clara Biggs competed in the 6A-7A Preliminary Meet vying for a spot in the championship in the uneven bars, the event she won at this year’s county championships. She improved on her 8.40 at county with an 8.650 on Wednesday but came up 0.700 points short of making the Top 8.
