A third consecutive trip to the Corky Kell High School Football Classic had the Tucker Tigers opening the day at the Georgia Dome in a 9:00 am game against the Kell Longhorns.
Advance discounted tickets are available at the Tucker High School office for $13 between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Friday. Tickets at the Georgia Dome will be $17.
Coach Bryan Lamar’s Tigers are coming off a tough 8-4 record a year ago which ended in a second round Class 6A state playoff loss to South Forsyth. The season included a rough start with a 50-15 loss to McEachern in the Corky Kell prime time game before rebounding with a win over Florida state runner-up Godby.
The Tigers are looking for their first Corky Kell victory after losing their debut in 2014 in a 32-29 overtime thriller against Norcross.
It will be the Tigers first meeting with Kell. The Longhorns finished 9-4 with a Class 5A quarterfinal loss to Northgate a year ago.
Offensively, the Tigers return their leading rusher and DeKalb’s second leading rusher Chris Broadwater who rushed for 1,304 yards (108.7/game) and 18 touchdowns last season along with backfield mate Samuel Bryant (668 yards, 10 TDs) from an offense that rushed for over 3,700 yards on the season.
Leading receiver Joshua Vann also returns on offense after hauling in 19 receptions for 399 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago. Tucker will have to replace two year starting quarterback Garrett Rigby who graduated after throwing for 1,161 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2015.
Tucker returns leading tackler Antonio Showers, a junior defensive end, who had a team high 71 tackles, 6 sacks and 12 tackles for a loss. Junior linebacker Gerry Vaughn also returns after piling up 58 tackles, including 14 tackles for a loss, while collecting a safety and an interception return for a touchdown.
