History

Par is not always the course as DeKalb County Schools’ teams tee it up from golf season to golf season. The county is home to three state championship trophies (all boys) and seven individual state champions (5 boys, 2 girls).

Boys’ History

The boys’ contingent holds all three of DeKalb’s state golf titles.

Avondale won the first title in 1965 (AAA) to set the pace early on for the DeKalb golf teams. Lithonia would follow 12 years with a state title in 1977 (AA) and Druid Hills joined the state title holders in 1986 (AA).

Avondale also lays claim to three individual titles with the first coming via the swing of Tommy Barnes in 1961. Wendell Coffee (1962, 1965) won the other two Avondale individual state titles to become the only two-time winner from DeKalb.

DeKalb had back-to-back titlists for the second time as Henderson’s Steve McNight won in 1976 and Lithonia’s Michael Donahue followed in 1977.

Dunwoody leads the way on the regional level with 10 region championship trophies. Druid Hills follows in a distant second with four. Lakeside, Stone Mountain and Tucker all possess two region championships while Lithonia, Chamblee, Henderson and Cedar Grove are one-time title holders.

Girls’ History

Two individual girls’ state golf titles reside in DeKalb County and are held by Henderson’s Marty Goldthrop.

Goldthrop holds the highest honors on the girls’ side of DeKalb golf winning consecutive individual state titles in 1993-94. She scored 78 and 85, respectively, in securing the championships.

DeKalb holds five girls’ region championships with all of them coming since the 2000 season. Lakeside leads the way with three (2001, 2003, 2009) and Dunwoody follows with two (2000, 2001).

DeKalb County Schools Golf Championships

The Dunwoody Wildcats have won or tied for six consecutive championships to run their championship total to 12 at the DeKalb County Schools Golf Championships.

Stone Mountain is a distant second with three titles on the boys’ side and Druid Hills holds two. Lakeside (2007) and Lithonia (1992) owned the only other titles until 2014. Arabia Mountain played five-time defending champ Dunwoody to a tie after regulation. The two teams played three playoff holes and were still tied as darkness called the tournament and the two teams took home a share of the 2014 title.

DeKalb County reinstated the DeKalb County Golf Championships in 2005 and the girls’ joined the hunt for the county title. Lakeside leads the way with five titles, followed by Dunwoody with three and Chamblee holds one title.
