Two Class 5A State Tennis Tournament victories came to the Lakeside boys’ and girls’ tennis teams as they opened the first round with wins over Region 3 opponents.
The Vikings (11-7) rolled to a 4-0 win over Northgate at the DeKalb Tennis center to open state tournament play on Thursday.
Andy Moelich only needed about 40 minutes for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Northgate’s Bryson Takuarian at No. 1 singles to give the Vikings the first point of the match.
Luke Santucci matched the 6-0, 6-0 win by Moelich by knocking off Northgate’s David Onohwosa at the No. 2 singles slot.
Charlie Brewer and Charlie Rothberger clinched the match for Lakeside with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Down a set, the Northgate duo of Kier Morgwas and Bennett Bernard battled to a 2-2 tie in the second set before the Lakeside team reeled off four consecutive game wins to seal the match at 6-2.
Lakeside’s No. 2 doubles team of Kevin Mooney and Quinn Douglass fell behind 3-4 to Northgate’s Phoenix Dixon and Nathan Rucker but rallied with three consecutive wins to take the opening set 6-4. They only allowed one game to the Northgate duo in the second set by closing out the win at 6-1.
At No. 3 singles Evan Littlejohn won his opening set 6-3 for Northgate’s William Boney to go up a set. Boney battled in the second set leading 3-2 when the match ended.
Lakeside takes on Johns Creek in the second round. Johns Creek defeated Creekview 3-0 to advance to the second round. The date and time have yet to be set for the Sweet 16 meeting at Johns Creek.
GIRLS
Lakeside’s girls’ tennis team was also victorious in the opening round taking a 4-0 win over Newnan at the DeKalb Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Newnan managed to win just five total games in the four matches as Lakeside put the match away quickly.
Rowan Scronce had one of the 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at No. 1 singles to get the ball rolling towards the second round. Nora Grady took the win at No. 2 singles with an easy 6-1, 6-3 win for Lakeside’s second point of the day.
Lakeside also swept the doubles matches allowing just one game to the opponent. Gianna Uyeda and Julian Scalzini knocked off their opponents 6-1, 6-0.
The No. 2 doubles team of Eden Brandman and Jordan Beer flew to a 6-0, 6-0 win to close out the match.
Lakeside takes on the winner of Milton and Creekview in the second round. The site, date and time of the match will be set later.
