The Cedar Grove Lady Saints and Champion Lady Chargers cruised to their seventh victories against no losses in DeKalb County girls’ middle school basketball action on Wednesday night.
Cedar Grove (7-0, 4-0) rolled to a 54-8 Region 2 road win over the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs (3-3, 1-2) to keep their unblemished record intact. Ziryah Bell hit for a game-high 23 points (5 assists) and completed a double-double with 11 steals to lead Cedar Grove. Jessica Morton also put together a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Conner Hall added 12 points.
Champion (7-0, 4-0) stayed in tune with Cedar Grove by easing to a 49-12 win over the Sequoyah Lady Braves (1-6, 0-4). Nkechi Ugboaja topped the scoring for Champion with 16 points (9 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 blocks) and was joined in double figures by Madison Diggs with 12 points (7 steals). Rakiah Miller added nine points (8 rebounds) for Champion.
GIRLS RECAPS
Chapel Hill 36, Bethune 16
The defending champion Chapel Hill Lady Panthers (6-1, 4-0) took over the top spot in Region 1 with a convincing 36-16 win over the previously unbeaten Bethune Lady Lions (6-1, 3-1). Faith Andrews scored a game-high 20 points (7 steals, 5 rebounds) to lead the Panthers in the win. Teammate Marisah Thomas joined Andrews in double figures with 10 points (4 steals, 4 rebounds).
Stephenson 29, Miller Grove 15
The Stephenson Lady Jaguars (3-4, 2-2) broke a two-game skid with a 29-15 decision over the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (5-2, 2-2). Ava Gilreath hit for a game-high 16 points to lead Stephenson in the win.
Druid Hills 49, Stone Mountain 1
The Druid Hills Dragons (3-4, 3-1) moved into a three-way tie for second in the Region 1 standings via a 49-1 win over the Stone Mountain Lady Pirates (0-7, 0-4). Madison Evans scored a game-high 21 points and Kya Wilcox added 11 points and some key rebounding.
Columbia 44, Freedom 0
The Columbia Lady Eagles (5-2, 3-1) moved into a three-way tie for second in Region 1 with a 44-0 win over the Freedom Lady Rams (1-6, 0-4). Maliyah Elliot stroked the nets for a game-high 20 points (4 assists, 2 steals) for Columbia. She was joined in double figures by teammate Mariona Williams with 11 points (5 steals, 3 assists). Kamora Collier added seven points (8 rebounds) in the win.
Lithonia 20, Peachtree 13
The Lithonia Lady Bulldogs (4-2, 2-1) climbed into the top five in the Region 2 standings with a 20-13 road win against the Peachtree Lady Patriots (2-5, 1-3). London Whitfield led Peachtree with seven points and Mae Gaines contributed five steals.
McNair 17, Redan 13
The McNair Lady Mustangs (3-4, 2-2) evened their Region 1 record at 2-2 with a tight 17-13 win over the Redan Lady Raiders (1-6, 1-3). Wilihia Edwards scored six points to lead Redan in the loss.
Salem 26, Tucker 12
The Salem Lady Lions (5-2, 3-1) remain in a two-way tie for third in Region 2 following a 26-12 win over the Tucker Lady Tigers (2-5, 1-3). Selicia Edwards scored six points to lead Tucker.
BOYS RECAPS
The Stephenson Jaguars (7-0, 4-0) needed two overtimes to defeat the Miller Grove Wolverines (5-2, 2-2) 46-45 to become the last remaining boys’ team without a loss this season.
Miller Grove rallied from a 19-15 halftime deficit to knot the game at 34-34 to force overtime. Both teams scored nine points in the first overtime and headed into the second extra period knotted at 43-43.
The second overtime was a defensive battle with the teams combining for a combined five points. Stephenson’s Terry Coleman, who had 17 of his 20 points in the second half and overtime, hit the go-ahead free throw for the win.
Stone Mountain 44, Druid Hills 37
The Stone Mountain Pirates (4-3, 3-1) moved into a four-way tie for second in Region 1 with a 44-37 win over the previously unbeaten Druid Hills Dragons (6-1, 3-1). The Pirates had three players in double figures led by Timothy McMiller with 15 points and 11 points each from Robert Banks and Robert Frazier. It was the second consecutive game for the Pirates to knock off an unbeaten team.
Chapel Hill 34, Bethune 19
The Chapel Hill Panthers (5-1, 3-1) bounced back from a loss last weekend to give the Bethune Lions (4-3, 1-3) their third consecutive loss. Noah Kirkland (2 blocks) put up a 10-point, 12-rebound performance to lead the Panthers in the win while teammate Amari Stock (5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals) added nine points. The win had the Panthers in a four-way tie for second in Region 1.
Peachtree 49, Lithonia 23
The Peachtree Patriots (5-2, 4-0) kept pace with Henderson and Champion atop the Region 2 standings following a 49-23 victory over the Lithonia Bulldogs (0-6, 0-3). Peachtree had a pair of players in double figures led by Cody Krieger with 20 points and Kaiden Horton added 19.
Henderson 44, Beacon Hill 21
The Henderson Cougars (5-2, 4-0) remain tied in first place in Region 2 following a 44-21 win over the Beacon Hill Bulldogs (4-3, 2-2). Jacob Miller topped the scoring with 19 points and Ari Shapiro added 12 points. Jake Davis contributed a big 15 rebounds for the Cougars.
Champion 58, Sequoyah 6
The Champion Chargers (5-2, 4-0) stayed knotted with Peachtree and Henderson at the top of the Region 2 standings as they knocked off Sequoyah 58-6. Paul “Deuce” Smith II and Aiden Clark led a balanced attack for the Chargers with seven points each as Champion shot a blistering 83 percent from the floor (27-33).
Cedar Grove 34, Chamblee 27
The Cedar Grove Saints (4-3, 3-1) moved into fourth place alone in Region 2 with a balanced attack in a 34-27 over the Chamblee Bulldogs (3-3, 1-2). Dequarrion Trammell (6 rebounds, 5 steals) was the top scorer for the Saints with six points while Zyon Freeman (7 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Chase Thomas (5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals) contributed five points each.
Redan 40, McNair 26
The Redan Raiders (6-1, 3-1) sit in a four-way tie for second in Region 1 after defeating the McNair Mustangs (0-7, 0-4) 40-26. Dalemontae McCallum hit for a game-high 19 points to lead the Raiders.
Columbia 31, Freedom 30
The Columbia Eagles (2-4, 1-3) notched their second win of the season by slipping past the Freedom Rams (3-4, 1-3) 31-30. Cameron Matthews led the way with seven points and Jayden Taylor was tough on defense with 10 blocks in the game for Columbia.
Salem 35, Tucker 33
The Salem Lions (1-6, 1-3) picked up their first win of the season in a highly contested 35-33 win over the Tucker Tigers (0-7, 0-4). Ryan Perry was tops in the scorebook with 13 points for the Lions.
