A tough day in the field and at the plate made the Miller Grove Wolverines first trip to the Class 2A Elite Eight State Fastpitch Softball Tournament in Columbus a 16-0 loss to the Stephens County Indians in the first round of the double elimination tournament in Columbus.
Miller Grove takes on Pike County (23-7), a 6-1 loser to Appling County, at 5:00 pm at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus on Thursday (today) as they try to stay alive in the state tournament.
Playing as the home team the Wolverines (19-3) gave up five runs in the first inning as four errors opened the door for the Indians. Riley Walker and Carson Shows drove in one run each for Stephens County (22-6) as all five runs were unearned against Miller Grove pitcher Amiyah Morrison.
Morrison got the final two outs via a grounder back to the mound and a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Miller Grove’s Saniya Francis reached base in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch but was left stranded at second.
Two singles to lead off the top of the second coupled with three errors extended the lead to 8-0 before a RBI double by Shows and a two-out, two-run homer to left by Walker had the Wolverines down 10-0 heading to the bottom of the second.
The Wolverines drew a pair of walks only to leave them stranded as Walker struck out the side to keep Miller Grove scoreless.
Two-run homers by Iverson and Shows closed out the game to send the Wolverines to the losers’ bracket on Thursday.
