The assault on the Miller Grove and DeKalb County fast pitch softball records continued Tuesday night as Wolverine pitcher Amiyah Morrison with an eight-strikeout performance in a three-inning 18-0 win over the Columbia Eagles at Miller Grove.
Morrison played a part in all nine outs with her assist on a groundout against Columbia’s first batter of the game and then eight strikeouts in facing 10 batters. An error allowed one Columbia baserunner in the game.
Her eight strikeouts pushed her career strikeout mark to 435 and 108 on the season in leading Miller Grove to a 9-2 record overall and atop the Region 6-2A standings at 6-0.
Morrison broke the Miller Grove career mark a year ago with her 302nd in a game against Holy Innocents. She sits in 10th on the all-time DeKalb strikeout list with the opportunity to move further up the charts with eight games remaining in the regular season.
She passed Jaden Powell of Stephenson (432) with her eight strikeouts against Columbia and moved within three wins of the Miller Grove record as she notched her 39th. She trails former Wolverine Deyonce Anderson (2014-17) who sits in ninth with 41.
Her only losses on the mound this season have come to Region 4-5A co-leader Lakeside (8-0) and Class 4A Hampton (6-4). She will go for win number 10 in a scheduled game against Salem on Thursday at Miller Grove.
Miller Grove took advantage of 12 walks and collected just four hits in the win, scoring six in the bottom of the first and 12 more in the second. Armonie Morrison had an infield single to drive in one run and Saniya Francis had an RBI single to left. Taniyah Simpson and Autumn Steele also forced in runs with a hit-by-pitch and a walk with the bases loaded.
Morrison struck out the side twice in the game.
