Playing in the friendly confines of North DeKalb Stadium the Druid Hills Red Devils played and won their first region contest in four years with a 28-13 Region 5-4A victory over the North Springs Spartans on Friday night.
Running back Zach Manning spurred the Red Devils (2-1, 1-0) to the win rushing for 210 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion to account for half the team’s points in the game. Mannings second touchdown came with less than two minutes in the first half to extend a 13-7 lead. He then added a two-point conversion run to send Druid Hills into the half up 21-7.
Bre’lon Cade added a 14-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Travion Bryant earlier in the first half.
North Springs closed to within 21-13 late in the third quarter with a rushing touchdown but missed the extra point. Druid Hills sealed the win early in the fourth quarter when Deonte Smith returned a fumble 62 yards for the scoop and score. Wyatt Bennett hit his second PAT of the game for the final of 28-13.
Druid Hills defense held North Springs to just 140 yards of total offense led by Xavier Norris had 8.5 tackles (3.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles) and Caleb Rourk added 11 tackles. Issack Nishimwe added five tackles (1 tackle for loss).
Miller Grove 7, Heritage (Conyers) 0
The Miller Grove Wolverines went on the road to the undefeated Heritage (Conyers) Patriots and won a defensive slugfest 7-0 to come away with the win to even their mark at 2-2 on Friday night.
Both teams found the going on offense tough all night as they went into the fourth quarter knotted at 0-0 before the Wolverines found the end zone. Running back Jarius Goldwire scored on a toss sweep from five yards out for the go-ahead touchdown. Ahmed Jatta kicked the PAT to make it 7-0.
Miller Grove sealed the win when defensive tackles Maurice Seal intercepted a Patriots (2-1) pass and took a knee to allow the Wolverines to run out the clock.
Tucker 41, Lithonia 7
The Tucker Tigers jumped to a 34-0 halftime lead on the way to a 41-7 Region 5-4A win over the Lithonia Bulldogs at Hallford Stadium on Friday night.
Tucker (2-1, 1-0) took the lead for good on a 10-yard touchdown run up the middle by Christian Copeland with 57 seconds left in the first quarter. Two minutes later Izayah Horsham exploded for a 60-yard touchdown run to up the lead to 14 on Eli French’s second PAT of the game.
Sophomore quarterback Jace German scored on a 19-yard run around the right side to push the led to 21-0. A 14-yard fumbler return by LeShaun Huggins, who also had an interception in the game, and German to Joziah Horne TD pass aided the second quarter explosion for the Tigers.
Trailing 41-0 in the third quarter, the Bulldogs (2-1, 0-1) got on the scoreboard via a Jamon Coggins 14-yard touchdown pass to Kayden Miller.
Towers 38, Cherokee Christian 6
Quarterback Quaricus Hurley and receiver Jaylen Robinson connected for four touchdown passes to lead the Towers Titans to a 38-6 road victory over the Cherokee Christian Warriors on Friday.
The pair gave the Titans (2-1) a 6-0 lead with their first connection in the opening quarter and then Hurley made it 14-0 with an 11-yard TD Run. Cherokee (0-3) closed the gap to 14-6 and Hurley and Robinson connected for a 21-yard TD in the back of the end zone to make it 20-6 in the second quarter.
Another TD pass made it 26-6 and then in the third quarter the advantage went to 32-6 as Hurley hit Robinson in the left flat and Robinson weaved his way through the defense for a 56-yard scoring play. Tramon Wooten wrapped up the scoring by intercepting a pass four yards deep in the end zone and returning it 100 yards for the final of 38-6.
