Chamblee junior Dylan Lawson came away from the Class 5A Boys’ State Golf Tournament at Okefenokee County Club in Blackshear with a Top 15 finish as one of three DeKalb players that earned state tournament berths this spring.
Dunwoody junior Cora Webster (6A girls) and Arabia Mountain senior Avah Allen (5A girls) joined Lawson in their respective girls’ classifications.
Lawson playing in the Class 5A boys’ tournament for the second consecutive season improved 23 spots and seven strokes from a year ago shooting a 156 (79-77) in the two rounds. Lawson finished tied for 31st in 2023 with a 163 (82-81) in his first state appearance.
Lawson’s 156 is the third best score put up by a DeKalb player since 2017 and the second best overall finish at state (two rounds) over the same period. Dunwoody’s Jackson Perry finished in a tie fourth in 2017 with a 143 (74-69) and Dunwoody’s Braeden Rice tied for 15th a year ago with his 151 total (77-74) as the only two better scores.
Lawson was the 2024 DeKalb County Golf Championships runner-up after tying with a 75 and going into a two-hole playoff before dropping a one stroke loss on the final playoff hole to Lakeside’s Andy Moelich. He shot an 82 to finish tied for 10th in the Area 3-5A Boys’ Tournament to earn a spot in the state tournament.
The Class 5A girls’ state tournament was also played at Okefenokee Country Club and Arabia Mountain’s Avah Allen finished 29th overall out of 63 participants as she shot a 191 (96-95).
Allen’s finish was the best for an Arabia Mountain girl since Miracle Goolsby’s tie for 25th in 2019. Allen’s score was 11 strokes better than Goolsby’s 202 (99-103). Allen won the 2024 DeKalb County Girls’ Golf Championship with a round of 91 at Sugar Creek Golf Course in April to become the first Arabia Mountain winner since Mariah Kuranga in 2014.
Allen shot a 97 to finish third in the Area 3-5A Tournament to land the state qualifying slot.
In Class 6A, Dunwoody’s Cora Webster finished 41st overall with her 180 (91-89) and bested teammate Amelia Mutert’s score of 194 (104-90). Mutert finished 33rd overall in the 2023 state tournament.
Webster’s second round 89 was the best one round score for a DeKalb girl at state since Mariah Kuranga shot an 81 to tie for seventh in 2015 when the state tournament was just one round. Webster finished fifth in the 2024 DeKalb County Girls’ Championship with a 103.
Webster proceeded to improve moving on to the area tournament where she shot a 100 (3 strokes better than DeKalb) at Area 3-6A Tournament to finish eighth overall and get the lone single player qualifying spot for the state tournament. She then knocked 9 and 11 strokes off her score in the two rounds of state respectively.
