The Dunwoody Wildcats put three qualifiers through to the final nine holes of the 2024 DeKalb County Girls’ Golf Championship to win their seventh title under Coach Doug Friedlander.
Dunwoody compiled a team total of 305 (96-103-105) to end Chamblee’s two-year run as the county champions. Junior Amelia Mutert shot a 96 (49-47) to finish fourth overall and lead a group of four players in the Top 6 finishers.
Cora Webster 103 (51-52) was fifth while senior Gretchen Springs (52-54) and junior Madeline Vicine (55-51) tied for sixth as both shot a round of 106 on the day.
Arabia Mountain’s Avah Allen claimed the girl’s low medalist honors with her 91 (43-48) as she outdueled defending champion Catherine Hanson 93 (49-44) of Chamblee who came close to pulling even with Allen on the final nine holes. Allen is the second player from Arabia Mountain to win the girls’ title and first since Mariah Kuranga won back-to-back titles in 2014-15.
Chamblee had the best score of the teams that did not qualify for the team title with Hanson’s 93 as Julia Mansour 118 (56-62) tied Druid Hills junior Tihun Chapman 118 (60-58) for ninth.
Druid Hills freshman Aiko Benford put together a solid round of 95 (48-47) to finish third overall and give Druid Hills a score of 213 with just two full round qualifiers.
Lakeside’s Bell Perez came in eighth overall with a score of 110 (55-55).
Dunwoody last won the county title in 2017 completing a four-peat (2014-17) and won titles in 2005 (the first girls’ championship) and in 2011. This year’s title gives Friedlander 22 county championships (15 boys, 7 girls) including six sweeps of both titles (2005, 2011, 2014-17). Dunwoody’s Walter Kimbrell has five boys’ titles (1989-91, 1994-95) all won in a seven-year span.
