A defensive stop on a two-point conversion in overtime propelled the Arabia Mountain Rams to a 24-23 victory over the Tucker Tigers to claim the Region 4-5A title at Adams Stadium on Friday night.
The Rams (9-1) scored first in overtime on a one-yard run by Daniel Turpin on fourth and goal and with Mohen Masih’s PAT took a 24-17 lead with Tucker’s turn in overtime coming up.
The Tigers scored on the third play of third overtime turn on offense as Jordan McCoy found the end zone. Tucker elected to go for the win with a two-point conversion but a trio of Rams that included Seth Keene, Brandon Scott and Malcolm Snipes combined on the stop to secure the win for the Rams.
Regulation ended tied at 17-17 after an Eli French 25-yard field goal with 4:15 to play knotted the game.
Arabia Mountain jumped in front in the first quarter on Turpin’s first one-yard touchdown run of the game. A Jayden Thomas pass to Alex Richard made it 8-0 early.
Tucker responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jamar Graham over the middle to Christian Whitmore with 1:24 left in the opening period. French hit the PAT to pull Tucker within 8-7.
The Tiger duo struck again with 11:03 left in the first half as Graham connected with Whitmore for a 30-yard touchdown pass. French’s PAT made it 14-8 and the lead held until the half.
Laron Jones tied the game with a 95-yard kickoff return to open the second half. The Tigers blocked the PAT to keep the game tied.
The Rams defense intercepted a pass and Arabia Mountain converted the turnover into a 27-yard field goal by Masih to go up 17-14 with 7:27 to play in the quarter.
Both teams entertain Region 1 foes in the first round of the state playoffs as the Tigers also get a home playoff game with their second-place finish in the region.
