Three touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game propelled the Druid Hills Red Devils to a 27-18 come-from-behind victory over the McNair Mustangs on Friday night at North DeKalb Stadium.
McNair (1-1) went up 18-7 with 11:19 to play on a 12-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jeremy Victor, his third rushing touchdown of the night, and appeared to have things in hand when Carlos Lemons intercepted a Druid Hills pass at the McNair 13 with 10:31 to play.
McNair ran two plays for a first down but a fumble at the end of the second play was recovered by Druid Hills’ Taylor Holloman at the McNair 30.
The Red Devils drove to the McNair 10, but a holding penalty pushed them back to the 20 and three plays later they were facing a fourth and 16 situation they were forced to with as the clock ticked below seven minutes to play.
Quarterback Kai Robinson dropped back on the fourth-down play and rolled to his right and threw to the end zone where Reese Patterson had come open. Patterson hauled in the pass for the score. A missed point after held the score at 18-13 with 6:26 to play.
Druid Hills tried an onside kick and after a discussion the ball was awarded to the Mustangs at the Red Devils’ 49. The Druid Hills defense forced McNair to punt and the Red Devils needing a touchdown were 77 yards away with 3:18 remaining.
Robinson got the Red Devils moving connecting with Zion Johnson for 22 yards and Akeem Cunningham for 24 to put them at the McNair 25. He then dropped back and hit Patterson in the flats and senior wound his way into the end zone to put Druid Hills up 19-18 with 1:18 to play.
McNair took over the ball at its own 35 as the kickoff went out of bounds. Facing a third and 14 after John Golden sacked Victor, the Mustangs were looking to pass again when the snap went awry, and Victor was knocked down trying to recover. As the ball was hit by one Druid Hills player and knocked towards the five-yard line Druid Hills Neiko Brown scooped it up and took it into the end zone.
Robinson then passed to Zach Johnston for the two-point conversion to make it a nine-point lead at 27-18 with 43.2 seconds to play.
McNair ran one play, and the clock ran out to end the game.
Druid Hills took the early lead in the game as Robinson hit Brelon Cade on a slant over the middle for a 30-yard touchdown pass play with 2:13 left in the first quarter. Wyatt Bennett hit the PAT to make it 7-0.
McNair answered with two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 12-7 lead at the half. A 24-yard pass to Keyontae Phillips from Victor converted a second down and 20 situation. The play set up a five-yard touchdown run by Victor to close the gap to 7-6 with 9:11 left in the first half.
Victor scored on a two-yard run with 1:43 left in the half following a big catch for a 19-yard gain by Phillips on a fourth and 12 play.
The 2-0 start for the Red Devils is the best since going 2-0 to begin the 2014 season under the direction of former coach Mark Adams.
Redan 28, Stone Mountain 21
The Redan Raiders held off a furious Stone Mountain Pirates rally to win 28-21 at Hallford Stadium on Friday night.
The Raiders were up 21-0 behind a 60-yard touchdown run by Jackie Bowdry, a 10-yard touchdown run by Jamir Brown and an eight-yard touchdown pass from Dameon Jones to Brice Blackburn.
Brown blocked a punt in the fourth quarter and recovered it for a touchdown to seal the win for Redan.
Stone Mountain fell to 0-2 on the season despite the valiant comeback attempt.
Columbia 35, Woodland-Stockbridge 0
The Columbia Eagles scored a defensive touchdown and dominated Woodland-Stockbridge in a 35-0 road victory on Friday night.
Senior athlete Jadan Baugh returned an interception for 42 yards and a touchdown in the third quarter to push Columbia out to a 21-0 lead. Baugh had a rushing touchdown in the first half to go with another from Rashaad Silver. Lamaze Williams added 153 yards rushing on the night.
The defense came up big in the shutout win as well led by Charles Harris with 10 tackles. Edwin Moore had three tackles for a loss to go with a 3-sack, 4 tackles for a loss performance by Cain Jefferson and a six-tackle, two tackles for a loss by Jamonta Tukes.
Columbia improved to 1-1 on the season.
Lakeside 20, Northview 7
The Lakeside Vikings’ defense held Northview to 152 yards of total offense and Jean-Luc Noison had a second consecutive big night in a 20-7 road victory over Northview.
Noison finished the night with two touchdowns and 158 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Vikings are now 2-0 on the season for the second consecutive season.
Stephenson 54, Riverdale 0
The Stephenson Jaguars went on the road to Riverdale and brought home a 54-0 shutout win to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Senior running back Devin Ingram led them with two touchdowns and 78 yards on six carries to go with four carries for 71 yards and touchdown by Tyler Bercy. Bercy also added a receiving touchdown.
The Jaguars defense held Riverdale to 51 yards of total offense in the game and scored a pair of touchdowns. Romando Craddock returned a fumble 43 yards for a score and Destin Davies had a pick-six of 22-yards. Stephenson led 30-0 at the half.
Chamblee 21, Towers 12
Sophomore Ed Reed III had a big night on special teams to lead the Chamblee Bulldogs to a 21-12 win over Towers (0-2) as Chamblee improved to 2-0 with the win at Avondale Stadium.
Reed blocked both a punt and field goal and contributed with a caused fumble and a fumble recovery all on special teams.
Backup quarterback Everett Boyer came into the game following an injury and threw a touchdown on his first play and Larry Harris sealed the game with a 60-yard touchdown run.
Miller Grove 35, Maynard Jackson 22
The Miller Grove Wolverines jumped out in front of Maynard Jackson and held the Jaguars at bay on the way to a 35-22 in the Atlanta Bash at Henderson Stadium Saturday morning.
Amonte Harden (18-12-0, 250 yards, 2 TDs passing) hit Ali Dargan (4 receptions, 110 yards, 2 TDs) on a short pass to the right side for a 79-yard touchdown pass play as Dargan broke a tackle and raced down the sideline for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Ta’Jon Corbitt made it a 14-0 lead in the second quarter with a one-yard run over the left side.
Jackson tied the game at 14-14 before the half, but the Wolverines would regain the lead at 22-14 in the third quarter on another touchdown connection between Harden and Dargan of 14 yards. Corbitt pushed the lead to 28-14 on a hard run on second and goal at the eight-yard line late in the third quarter.
Jackson pulled within 28-22 on a big fourth down pass in the fourth quarter only to have Miller Grove seal the win on Corbitt’s third touchdown of the game for the final of 35-22.
Dargan was named the Offensive Player of the Game and defensive lineman Maurice Seals was named the Defensive Player of the Game for the Wolverines.
Arabia Mountain 17, Heritage-Conyers 7
Four take-aways by the Arabia Mountain Rams keyed a 17-7 road win over Heritage of Conyers on Friday night.
The Rams (1-1) defense picked off two passes and recovered two fumbles to shut down the Heritage (1-1) offense. The offense was led by Julian Shanks with a 50-yard scramble for a touchdown and set up another touchdown with a 59-yard pass play to Alex Richard.
