Jon-Luc Noison made sure the Lakeside Vikings continued to build on their 8-2 season of a year ago has he rushed for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14 carries to propel Lakeside to a 26-6 season-opening victory over the visiting Berkmar Patriots at Adams Stadium on Thursday night.
The two teams had played almost 23 minutes of scoreless football when Noison went around the left side of the field and outraced the Berkmar defenders to the corner of the end zone for a touchdown with 1:28 left in the first half. Jay Hanson converted the PAT to make it a 7-0 Vikings lead.
The score was set up by a bad snap on a punt by the Patriots (0-1) that had the punter try to run for the first down only to have the Vikings stop him one-yard shy of the first down to get the ball on downs.
Grady Ellerman put the Vikings back in business by recovering a Berkmar fumble at the Patriot 47-yard line. Two big 15-yard penalties on the Patriots led to a 34-yard field goal off the foot of Hanson that sent the Vikings into the half up 10-0.
Noison opened the second half racing down the right sideline for a 79-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. Hanson tacked on the PAT to make it a 17-0 margin in favor of the Vikings with 11:37 left in the third quarter.
Berkmar got on the board with a 35-yard touchdown pass with 3:36 left in the third quarter. A bad snap led to no PAT attempt and the score was 17-6 for Lakeside.
The Vikings held Berkmar on downs at the Patriots’ 46 to set up their next score. Noison got tripped up at the 10-yard line after ripping off a 36-yard run to put the Vikings knocking at the door. Four plays later Kyle Davis took the snap and went into the end zone behind center Davis Anderson. Hanson made it 24-6 with 4:25 remaining in the game.
Another defensive stop by the Vikings forced Berkmar into the punt formation only to have the ball go over the punter’s head and out of the end zone for a safety. Lakeside went up 26-6 with 3:26 to play.
Berkmar got the football back on a punt with 1:25 to play only to have Lakeside’s Spencer Wise haul in an interception to seal the win.
