The Dunwoody Lady Wildcats went 5-0 in the annual DeKalb County Spikefest to bring home the Gold Bracket title on Saturday at Chamblee High School.
Dunwoody (5-2) won their Court 1 Pool at Tucker sweeping to wins over Tucker (25-12, 25-7), Miller Grove (25-11, 25-7) and Redan (25-11, 25-12) to advance to the Gold Bracket at Chamblee later in the day.
The Lady Wildcats next faced Decatur (3-0) who had swept Court 2 pool a Tucker with wins over Arabia Mountain (25-10, 25-19), Towers (25-10, 25-6) and Cedar Grove (25-8, 25-5) to advance to Chamblee.
The two teams played a tight three-set match with Dunwoody winning the tiebreaker 15-10. The teams split the first two sets as Dunwoody won a 29-27 decision in the opening set and Decatur bounced back with a 25-19 win in the second.
The Gold Bracket finals was set as Lakeside (5-1) downed Clarkston (25-18, 25-8), Cross Keys (25-7, 25-4) and by forfeit over Lithonia to win the Court 2 Pool at Chamblee to make the Gold Bracket. Lakeside defeated Druid Hills and moved into a semifinals against Chamblee.
Chamblee (3-1) won the Court 1 Pool on their home court with wins over Southwest DeKalb (25-11, 25-10), McNair (25-6, 25-4) and Columbia (25-9, 25-6) and hosted Lakeside in the semifinals. Lakeside won the match 2-0 (25-22, 25-19) to advance to the finals against Dunwoody.
Dunwoody closed out the title run with a 2-0 (25-18, 25-22) win over Lakeside.
SILVER BRACKET
The five pool runners-up converged on Tucker to compete in the Silver Bracket including eventual bracket champ Clarkston (6-1), Tucker (4-2), Southwest DeKalb (2-2), Arabia Mountain (2-2) and Stephenson (2-3).
Clarkston advanced from the Court 2 Pool at Chamblee with wins over Cross Keys (25-10, 25-28), Lithonia (forfeit) and a loss to Lakeside (18-25, 8-25).
The Angoras faced Southwest DeKalb, the Court 1 Pool runner-up at Chamblee, in the semifinals and pulled out a big three-set thriller. Southwest DeKalb won the opening set 25-22 and Clarkston bounced back with a 25-11 victory to force the third-set tiebreaker won in a close 15-12 decision by Clarkston.
Clarkston moved into the finals to face Tucker, Court 1 Pool runner-up at Tucker. Tucker had defeated Stephenson (25-15, 25-13) and Arabia Mountain (25-13, 25-18) to reach the championship round.
The two teams would play a very tight three-set battle in the finals. Clarkston picked up a 25-23 win in the opener with Tucker bouncing back 25-22 to even the match. Clarkston won the third-set tiebreaker as it went extra points in a 17-15 win.
BRONZE BRACKET
The third-place teams from the five pools converged on Tucker for the Bronze Bracket championship including Stone Mountain (3-2), McNair (2-3), Miller Grove (1-3), and Towers (1-3).
Stone Mountain came out on top winning a pair of matches to claim the trophy against McNair.
The two teams advanced to the finals with semifinal wins. Stone Mountain knocked off Towers (25-20, 25-7) who had defeated Cross Keys to reach the semifinals. and McNair won 26-24, 25-22 over Miller Grove.
The two had a classic in a second three-set match at Tucker in bracket play. Stone Mountain won the opening set 25-22 before McNair answered with a 25-22 win to knot the match. Stone Mountain then pulled out a 16-14 win to clinch the title.
COPPER BRACKET
The fourth-place teams from pool play met at Druid Hills for the Copper Bracket championship including Martin Luther King Jr. (2-3), Columbia (0-4), Cedar Grove (1-4) and Redan (0-4).
King won its semifinal match 25-13, 25-22 over Columbia to move into the finals while Cedar Grove played a tough three set match against Redan winning 2-1 (23-25,25-17,25-9).
The Lions swept the championship match 2-0 (25-15, 25-18) over the Saints to grab the crown.
