A pair of Redan Raiders got the call from Major League Baseball organizations as part of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft as Bernard Moon (2023) and Donye Evans (2020) were drafted two spots apart in the 16th round.

Moon, a shortstop/infielder, was drafted as the 468th pick overall by the Cincinnati Reds after leading the Raiders to a 65-30 record over three seasons including a Class 3A state runner-up finish in 2022.

The senior joins former Redan and Reds great Brandon Phillips as a part of the Reds organization. Moon’s career rivaled that of Phillips at the DeKalb County baseball powerhouse.

Moon finished the season with a DeKalb County season best of .629 with 48 RBI, 9 home runs, 50 runs scored and 38 stolen bases. He finishes his three-year career with the Raiders with .474 batting average, 20 home runs, 110 RBI, 125 runs scored 34 doubles and 10 triples.

Two picks after Moon the Detroit Tigers chose Evans, a pitcher out of North Carolina-Charlotte, with the 470th pick of the draft.

Evans signed with Vanderbilt coming out of Redan in the 2020 Covid shortened season and transferred to North Carolina-Charlotte for the 2023 season where he excelled as a reliver/closer for the 49ers.

The former Raider was 2-0 with four saves in 46 innings on the mound for the 49ers in 27 appearances while posting a 4.20 earned run average. He struck out eight batters in four innings, including seven consecutive, while allowing no runs and only one walk and two hits in a 3-2 49ers’ win over No. 1 seed Clemson in an elimination game to help the 49ers into the regional championship.

He finished his career at Redan with a 12-5 record and a 2.09 ERA in 110.67 innings with 133 strikeouts and just 62 walks.

Thirty-four Redan players have been drafted including 7 that were drafted twice after going to college to play.
