Druid Hills moved up one spot this year to second in the Class 4A Girls’ State Track and Field Championships and broke three state records on the way to the runner-up finish.

Druid Hills broke one state record four times, another twice and a relay record in the finals on the way to a second place finish in the Class 4A Girls’ State Track and Field Championships at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany on Saturday (May 13).

The Lady Red Devils tallied 64 points to finish behind a tough Westminster squad’s 124 and ahead of Pace Academy (54). Stephenson represented DeKalb with one of eight Top 10 finishes during Championship weekend coming in fifth (41 points). Miller Grove tied for 25th with five points.

Junior Sanaa Frederick had a hand in all three record breaking events by setting a new state record in the 100-meter dash in the prelims on Friday with a time of a time of 11.43 to break the mark of 11.50 set in 1986 by Butler’s Anita Howard and besting her County Championships record of 11.45. She went on to claim the gold in the event on Saturday breaking her own record with an amazing 11.41 to rank in the Top 25 in the U.S. this season.

Frederick finished third in the state in 2021 as a freshman and now has back-to-back gold medals in the event over the past two seasons.

Frederick teamed up with her twin sister Sole Frederick, 400-meter dash winner Jadyn Bolden and Miya Carthan to break an eight-year-old record in the 4×100-meter relay by running a 45.74 that surpassed the mark of 45.91 set by Baldwin in 2015.

The Frederick twins both broke the 200-meter dash record twice beginning in the prelims on Friday as Sole nipped Sanaa in the first heat running a 23.52 to Sanaa’s 23.53. Both times broke the old record of 23.64 set by Chamblee’s Mary Ann Erigha set 20 years agon in 2003.

The pair were then matched up again in the state finals on Saturday with Sanaa getting the upper hand with a time of 23.39 and Sole coming in just behind at 23.41. Both marks broke Sole’s record set in the prelims and all four times were U.S. Top 25 times this year.

This foursome from Druid Hills accounted for three individual gold medals, a silver, a bronze and two relay gold medals for Druid Hills. The foursome includes (f, l-r) Sanaa Frederick, Solo Frederick and (b, l-r) Jadyn Bolden and Miya Carthan.
