The Cross Keys Indians pulled off their first win since the 2019 season on March 14 by defeating The Cottage School 9-6 to break their streak of no wins that consisted of 11 games.
Cross Keys’ baseball program has struggled through a two-game covid season in 2020 and a covid related 2021 season with no team since winning their final game of the 2019 season. That was a 13-11 decision over Riverdale on April 13 of 2019 that also broke an 87-game skid for the Indians.
In the 2022 season the squad finished 0-6 and Marion Hill’s 2023 team was 0-3 heading into the March 14 road contest with Cottage.
Junior pitcher Miquel Mota keyed the big win pitching five innings with eight strikeouts and allowing just 3 earned runs and three walks. Mota was also 2-3 at the plate, drove in two runs, scored three runs with a double and three stolen bases.
Senior infielder Martin Garcia contributed a 2-3 day with his bat knocking in two runs, scoring three and collecting four stolen bases. Alexis Gopar was 1-2 swinging the bat with two RBI and two stolen bases.
Sophomore Alan Gomez scored two runs while going 2-4 offensively while freshman Justin Gutierrez was 1-3 and junior Alberto Correa was 1-2. The team finished with nine hits and 11 stolen bases on the day.
The Indians also broke a streak of 187 games without winning back-to-back games as they followed the March 14 win with a 7-6 victory over Cottage on March 21. The last time the Indians had won back-to-back games was April 21-22 of 2010 when they put together wins over Avondale (15-9) and Lithonia (11-5).
