The 80 participants in the 2023 DeKalb County Golf Championships battled the wind and rain with the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs and Dunwoody Wildcats earning repeats as champions during play at Mystery Valley Golf Club in Stone Mountain on Thursday.
Rain halted play ending rounds before players could finish 18 in the girls’ championship and with scoring on a nine-hole basis had Chamblee upending Dunwoody 160-166 with Lakeside following in third at 175.
A new girls’ champion was crowned as Catherine Hanson from Chamblee shot a round of 48 to win by four strokes Chamblee teammate Sophie Li who shot a 52. It is the second consecutive year for a Chamblee player to win the title.
Second place Dunwoody had three players in the Top 5 led by sophomores Amelia Mutert with a 53 and Cora Webster 56 and senior Lauren Garber with a 57.
Lakeside’s Laney Jackson, a junior, tied Garber with a 57 of her own. Lakeside’s Piper Brown finished with a 58.
BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
The boys’ championship went to Dunwoody 157-168 over Lakeside followed in order by Druid Hills (182), Chamblee (183) and Southwest DeKalb (206).
Dunwoody has won 13 of the last 14 championships outright while tying with Arabia Mountain in the 2014 championships.
The Wildcats carded the top three scores and four of the five led by junior Bradley Stone who shot a 76 with impressive nine-hole scores of 37 and 39. Stone defeated senior teammate and defending champion Braeden Rice who finished with an 81 to take second.
Dunwoody senior Caden Smith tied with Lakeside junior Aidan Tuttle as both shot an 83. Tuttle shot a 39 in the rain on the back nine.
Junior Joey Wirka rounded out the Wildcat scoring with his 84.
Lakeside’s Ross Raudebaugh shot an 85 total including a 38 on the front nine. Southwest DeKalb’s Ethan Quitman finished with an 86.
SKILLS CHALLENGE
The inaugural Skills Challenge competition took place during the tournament with 24 participants testing their skills in four parts of the gold game.
Martin Luther King’s Kaitlan Powell outperformed the field scoring a total of 160 points in the four events including tying for first with Columbia’s Sakhari Mathews in the short game competition with 90 points and with Claire Unokesan of Clarkston and Dutch Clarke of Chamblee in the chipping event as all scored five points.
Chrisicia Strose of King allowing Mathews and Seitonio Maxey of Columbia tie for second with 150 points. Walter Sledge of Druid Hills and Elias Burns of Lakeside tied for third with 145 points each.
There wa a three-way tie in the putting competition between Glodie Motembo of Martin Luther King, Mizeyah Stubbs of Stephenson and Talia Dixon of Arabia Mountain as each put up 50 points in the event.
Chamblee’s Mason Weiss brought home the driving championship with a score of 70 points.
