The Stone Mountain Lady Pirates wrestling team followed up their first Area Duals Wrestling title by winning the first girls’ Area Traditional Wrestling championship to advance nine wrestlers to the first all-girls’ GHSA State Sectional Wrestling meet.
Stone Mountain led by Naw Htoo’s win in the 100-weight class, Say Paw’s win in the 110-weight class and Nishimwe Alice’s win at 130 outdistanced Norcross 147-87 to claim the Area 4 title last week.
Cerenity Rucks (105), Nor Nisa (135) and Jessica Denkambi (140) brought home silver medals in the Area title win while Samsa Ibrahim (145) and Zaria Benson (155) collected bronze medals for the Pirates.
Lithonia finished eighth over in the team standings led by bronze medal winners Serenity Evans (120), Tyana Blue (125) and Mashaion Orr (135). All three wrestlers advanced to the State Sectional.
Arabia Mountain picked up an 11th place finish in the team standings led by Ariya McIver who claimed the gold in the 155-weight class. Brook Freeman also moved on the State Sectional finishing with a bronze medal at 140.
Other qualifers include Southwest DeKalb’s Cassidy Gibson (110, silver), Chamblee’s Lara Smith (170, 4th) and Stephenson’s Chan’Niyah Byrd (235, bronze).
The competitors are in competition today (Friday, Feb. 10) at Stephens County High School in Toccoa as they wrestle to reach the state tournament in Macon next week.
The guys have 110 wrestlers competing in various state sectionals across the state on Saturday (Feb. 11) for the opportunity to advance to state. Tucker won the Area 4-5A championship.
