The Redan Lady Raiders opened up a Region 6-2A high school basketball sweep of Towers by outscoring the Lady Titans 36-12 in the second half to win 49-24 at Redan on Friday night.
Towers (3-18, 1-10) was leading 14-13 with 7:08 to play in the third quarter when Redan (3-11, 3-8) went on a 15-1 run to take control of the game. Katoyra King hit one of two free throws to tie the game and Kaylen Whitfield followed with a three-point to give Redan the lead for good at 17-14 with 6:00 left on the third quarter clock.
Miyah Campbell added an old fashioned three-point play before Iteria Davis hit one of two free throws for Towers’ only point for a 4:15 span.
Ceony Jones scored six of the next eight points for Redan including a pair of offensive rebounds for baskets to make it 28-15. She would add four more points in the final 2:53 to spot her team a 33-17 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Whitfield would add eight points in the fourth quarter including two more three-pointers to help Redan close out the game. Londyn Felder added two layups.
Ceony Jones finished the night with 14 points and 11 rebounds (9 offensive) to lead Redan. Londyn Felder added 14 points and Kaylen Whitfield scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
Malayla Coleman led Towers with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Iteria Davis added 10 points and 7 rebounds.
(B) Redan 65, Towers 40
The Redan Raiders hit four three-pointers in the opening four minutes of the game and never looked back on the way to a 65-40 win over the Towers Titans to complete Region 6-2A sweep at home.
Jamir Brown opened the game hitting back-to-back three-pointers for the Raiders and Quintavious Roland made it three in a row for a 9-2 lead with 5:58 still left in the opening period.
Terry Terrell followed with a layup and a three-pointer both on assists from Zion Green as Redan (10-7, 6-5) opened up a 14-3 advantage. Brown added a drive and Zion Green added a bucket and a free throw to make it 19-5.
Towers’ Brandon Underwood hit a three-pointer with two seconds left in the quarter to make it 19-8 heading into the second quarter.
Underwood opened the second period with a jumper to cut the lead into single digits only to have Redan’s Zion Green answer with three consecutive baskets, the last on an offensive rebound, to push the lead back out to 15 (25-10) with 2:46 remaining in the half.
Towers (3-16, 2-9) managed a pair of offensive put backs by Corry Collins and Tedrick McDaniel as Redan held a 28-14 lead at the half.
Despite eight third quarter turnovers by Redan Towers could not cut into the lead even though Underwood would get a steal and heave a long three just before the buzzer to keep Towers within 14 (42-28) going into the final period of play.
Zion Green who had a steal and dunk late in the third quarter added an offensive put back and two free throws to open the fourth quarter for Redan to push the lead out to 46-28. Redan left no doubt as to who would win the game with a 10-0 run thanks in par to five Towers turnovers as the lead ballooned to 57-34.
Green finished the night with a game-high 23 points to go with 8 rebounds to lead Redan. Jamir Brown added 13 points and 5 rebounds for the Raiders.
Brandon Underwood hit for 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead Towers.
