Wednesday night’s DeKalb County middle school basketball action was the last region games of the season and finalized the 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ team tournament fields for the County Championships.
A key boys’ game for seeding took place between the Druid Hills Dragons (8-2, 7-2) and the Bethune Lions (8-2, 7-2) with Druid Hills taking the No. 3 seed in Region 1 via a 41-31 victory. Remi Guerro put together a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for Druid Hills to go with 11 points each from Clay Humphries and Stone Richards in the win.
Bethune got a game-high 14 points from Mekyrius Miller. Ke’shawn Briggs and L’Markus Scott contributed six points each for Bethune. Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season (3 regular season games remaining) beginning Wednesday, February 1.
BOYS RECAPS
Champion 59, Tucker 38
The Champion Chargers full court defensive pressure proved to be the difference once again in a 59-38 victory over the Tucker Tigers (2-8, 2-7) to clinch the Region 2 title. Jackson Ushery was the top scorer for Champion (10-0, 9-0) with 16 points and Carlin Cabbil pitched in with 11. Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Chapel Hill 49, Stone Mountain 22
The Chapel Hill Panthers (8-2, 8-1) picked up the No. 2 seed in Region 1 in a 49-22 win over the Stone Mountain Pirates (3-7, 2-7). A trio of players hit for 11 points each in the win including Makhi Lombard, Braylon Carter and Nazir Mergan. Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Salem 52, Beacon Hill 32
Salem (9-1, 8-1) secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming County Championships with a Region 2 52-32 win over the Beacon Hill Bulldogs. Matthew Norman led Beacon Hill with 16 points. Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Miller Grove 42, Freedom 35
The Miller Grove Wolverines (4-6, 4-5) earned the No. 5 seed in Region 1 with a 42-35 win over the Freedom Rams (3-7, 3-6). Caleb Calhoun had a game high double-double of 31 points and 17 rebounds to lead the way. Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
One other score reported was Stephenson (5-5, 4-5) 43-24 over the McNair Mustangs (1-9, 1-8). Stephenson is the No. 6 seed out of Region 1.
GIRLS RECAPS
Chapel Hill and Salem won their final region contests to secure perfect 9-0 marks in region play with three non-region games left to play in the season.
Chapel Hill 47, Stone Mountain 11
Chapel Hill (9-1, 9-0) secured the No. 1 seed in Region 1 by knocking off the Stone Mountain Lady Pirates (3-7, 2-7) 47-11. Mauri Barnes was the top scorer for Chapel Hill with 13 points (4 steals) and Janise McCoy hit for 10 point (5 steals, 5 assists). Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Salem 41, Beacon Hill 12
Salem (10-0, 9-0) is the lone remaining undefeated girls’ team following its 41-12 win over Beacon Hill (7-3, 7-2) to secure the No. 1 seed out of Region 2. Shanya Heath hit for 15 points to lead a trio of Lady Lions in double figures that included Mya Perry (13) and DeDe Spaulding (11). Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Champion 53, Tucker 6
The Champion Lady Chargers (9-1, 8-1) cruised to a 53-6 region win over the Tucker Lady Tigers (1-9, 1-8) to seal the No. 2 seed out of Region 2. Charmaine Owns hit for a game-high 26 points (7 steals) and Jhia Primrose knocked down 16 points in the win. Champion moves on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Stephenson 39, McNair 2
The Stephenson Lady Jaguars (9-1, 8-1) clinched the No. 2 seed from Region 1 with a 39-2 win over the McNair Lady Mustangs (0-10, 0-9). Loriel Murray hit for 16 points for Stephenson and Faith Fuller joined her in double figures with 10. Stephenson moves on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Druid Hills 41, Bethune 17
The Druid Hills Lady Dragons (8-2, 7-2) clinched the Region 1 No. 2 seed with a 41-17 win over the Bethune Lady Lions (6-4, 5-4). Keana Wilder hit for a game-high 19 points in the win. Both teams move on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
Freedom 25, Miller Grove 19
The Freedom Lady Rams (4-6, 4-5) got past the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (1-9, 1-8) 25-19 to earn the No. 7 seed out of Region 1. Destiny Swint led with 11 points (3 steals) and Grace Kasongo added 7 points (5 rebounds) and Genet Abatie has nice line of 4 points, 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Freedom moves on to the tournament at the completion of the regular season beginning Wednesday, February 1.
