Less than full schedule on Wednesday saw 12 teams open region action with victories in boys’ and girls’ DCSD middle school basketball play.
Four girls’ teams improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in region play including Champion and Salem in Region 2 and Druid Hills and Stephenson in Region.
GIRLS RECAPS
Champion 35, Lithonia 1
The Champion Lady Chargers got a 16-point, 10 steals double-double from Kamaya Rivers on the way to a 35-1 Region 2 win over the Lithonia Lady Bulldogs (0-2, 0-1). Brooklyn Smith added 11 points and 5 rebounds while Kimari Barnett chipped in 5 points and 8 rebounds for the Chargers (2-0, 1-0).
Salem 48, Cedar Grove 16
In other Region 2 play, Salem (2-0, 1-0) rolled to a 48-16 victory over the Cedar Grove Lady Saints (1-1, 0-1) to stay in a tie with Champion atop the early standings. Salem got 7 points from Airyahna Hinds and 6 points from Ziryah Bell.
Druid Hills 42, Freedom 15
Druid Hills improve to 2-0 on the season with a Region 1 42-15 victory over Freedom on Wednesday. Azelia Shell hit for a game-high 18 points and Kassidy Manning hit for 12 to lead the Lady Dragons.
Stephenson 45, Bethune 16
A pair of Stephenson Lady Jaguars scored in double figures to lead their squad to a 45-16 Region 1 win over the Bethune Lady Lions (1-1, 0-1). Cyncere Sims-Turner hit for 14 points and Faith Fuller added 13 in the win. Loriel Murray grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 6 points on the night for the Jaguars (2-0, 1-0). Assata McIntyre scored 6 points and Ryleigh Kimmons 5 for Bethune.
Redan 36, McNair 11
The Redan Lady Raiders evened their record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 1 with a 36-11 win over the McNair Lady Mustangs (0-2, 0-1). Aubri Brooks had a game-high 14 points to lead the Raiders while teammate Malia Mix grabbed 12 rebounds and score 8 points.
Peachtree 30, Henderson 19
The Peachtree Lady Patriots knocked the Henderson Lady Cougars (1-1, 0-1) from the unbeaten ranks with a 30-19 victory. Alison Gomez had 14 points for the Patriots (1-1, 1-0).
BOYS RECAPS
Champion 58, Lithonia 43
The full court press put on by the Champion Chargers (2-0, 1-0) proved too much for the Lithonia Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1) in a Region 2 58-43 win. Jackson Ushery had the hot hand for the Chargers hitting inside and outside the three-point line for a whopping 28 points. Carlin Cabbil was not far behind with 17 points for the Chargers.
Salem 36, Cedar Grove 32
The Salem Lions (2-0, 1-0) knocked off the defending champion Cedar Grove Saints (1-1, 0-1) 36-32 in a tightly contested game in Region 2. Kaeden Drake and Jake Morton were a big part of keeping the Saints in the game with 11 steals on defense. Tayson Blunt hit for 9 points and Morton added 8.
Druid Hills 53, Freedom 28
The Druid Hills Dragons matched their female counterparts with a Region 1 53-28 victory over the Freedom Rams (0-2, 0-1). Stone Richards hit for 11 points and Phillip Claybrooks knocked down 10 for the Dragons (2-0, 1-0).
Redan 55, McNair 22
The Redan Raiders joined Druid Hills atop the Region 1 standings cruising to a 55-22 win over the McNair Mustangs (0-2, 0-1). Amare Medhin (5 steals) and Tristan Mitchell (4 assists, 3 steals) tied for game-high honors with 16 points each to lead Redan (2-0, 1-0).
Peachtree 44, Henderson 29
Peachtree improved to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in Region 2 with a convincing 44-29 victory over the Henderson Cougars (1-1, 0-1). Mason Scharf and Will Kosobud hit for 11 points each for the Patriots (1-1, 1-0).
Bethune 43, Stephenson 30
The Bethune Lions evened up the night with Stephenson (1-1, 0-1) by taking the nightcap 43-30 over the Jaguars following a Stephenson win in the girls’ game. Mekyrius Miller put in 12 points and L’Markus Scott added 11 in the win for the Lions (2-0, 1-0) to move into a three-way tie with Druid Hills and Redan in region play.
