The Chamblee Lady Bulldogs won their first DeKalb County School District junior varsity county championship on Thursday at the Druid Hills Middle School course according to records dating back to 2005.
Chamblee placed five runners in the Top 11 to win 37-49 over Lakeside breaking the Lady Vikings four-year run-on top of the standings. Dunwoody (51) just missed out on second two points behind Lakeside and was followed in order by Tucker (135), Arabia Mountain (138), Druid Hills (168), Martin Luther King Jr. (175), Stephenson (193) and Southwest DeKalb (234).
The first runner to cross for Chamblee was Julia Cashin (14:57.70) as she claimed the bronze medal behind Dunwoody’s Abby Reams (14:03.70) in first and Tucker’s Mia Huhtanen (14:09.51) in second.
Samantha Yarbrough (15:03.39) was the second Lady Bulldog to cross the line taking fifth place and Addie Yarbrough (15:21.17) was eighth. Chamblee wrapped up the title as Kathleen Mattison (15:47.79) and Cassidy Pfau (15:48.68) finished 10th and 11th, respectively.
Lakeside had two Top 10 finishers in Carmen Pollard (15:03.37) taking fourth and Wendy Skinner (15:06.93) finishing sixth.
Reams gave Dunwoody its third consecutive individual winner in the girls’ junior varsity championship. She was joined in the Top 10 by teammates Clara Green (15:15.44) in seventh and Julia Lovell (15:21.30) in ninth.
Tucker’s fourth place finish was paced by an outstanding second place run by Mia Huhtanen (14:09.51).
BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Dunwoody Wildcats picked up their first boys’ DeKalb Junior Varsity Cross Country Championship title since 2018 with a convincing win over a field of nine other DeKalb teams.
Dunwoody put seven Wildcats in the Top 10 to runaway with a 23-64 win over Chamblee, the largest margin since Lakeside won by the same margin in 2014. Lakeside (84) was third followed in order by Druid Hills (126), Clarkston (151), Stephenson (169), Martin Luther King Jr. (177), Towers (203), Lithonia (213) and Redan (283).
Clarkston’s Caleb Koerber (12:20.52) edged out Dunwoody’s Jackson Bacon (12:21.49) for the individual title. It was Clarkston’s second individual title in the last three Championships.
Dunwoody’s Ben Snead (12:25.67) was third and teammate Andrew Halligan (12:31.21) was fourth. Dunwoody’s Lucas Boden (12:38.27) was sixth and teammates Christopher Parker (12:41.23 and Lucas Federico (12:41.45) were eighth and ninth, respectively.
Towers picked up a Top 10 finish with Innocent Bembetem (12:33.68) coming across in fifth.
Chamblee’s second place finish was paced by Michael Houlihan (12:39.00) who crossed in seventh. Chamblee has finished second twice since winning the even in 2019.
Lakeside got a 10th place from Nathan Pohl (12:47.72) as the defending champion Vikings finished third for the second time in the last three meets.
NOTE: The 2022 DCSD Varsity County Cross Country Championships are set for Wednesday, October 12 at the Druid Hills Middle School course. The girls will start at 5:15 pm with the boys following.
