Before the 2020 Covid 19 cancellation of spring sports the Chamblee Lady Bulldogs were coming off three consecutive state championships and with a 4-1 defeat of Midtown on Wednesday at Piedmont Park are one step away from returning to the state championship round.
Chamblee (15-6-1) was knocked out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals a year ago by Woodward Academy in a tight 3-2 match. Chamblee upended Woodward in the Sweet 16 this year to earn the match with Midtown.
Allison Lvovich got the Lady Bulldogs started on the way to victory by dominating Midtown’s Virginia Laster 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
The next point for Chamblee came via a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles by Isabelle Coursey over Midtown’s Sage Smith to make it 2-0.
Midtown picked up a win at No. 1 doubles as Annie Laster and Devon Dubau won 6-1, 6-4 over Chamblee’s team of Anaya Jaker and Grace Seel to make it 2-1.
Sophia Cheng won her first set quickly in a 6-2 start at No. 3 singles against Midtown’s Tristen Thompson. The pair would go to a tiebreaker in the second set with Cheng pulling out the 7-6 win with a 7-2 margin in the tiebreaker.
Kennedy Talbert and Genesis Pickens teamed up to close out the 4-1 win by winning a three-set match against Midtown’s Olivia Allen and Sally Jones by a score of 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.
Chamblee is set to go on the road against the Coffee County/Greenbrier winner in the Class 5A semifinals.
