Madison County made a penalty kick just two minutes 2:16 into the game on the way to a 1-0 Class 4A first round girls’ state playoff victory over the Druid Hills Lady Red Devils at Adams Stadium on Thursday night.

A late handball call in the box out front of the Druid Hills’ goal set up a penalty kick for Madison County. Madison County’s Emma Chason converted the kick past an outstretched Kaitlin Sinkler to put her team up 1-0 with 37:44 to play in the first half.

The game was tied going into the half and Druid Hills came out putting the pressure on the Madison County defense pushing the ball up the field in an effort to tie the game.

Druid Hills (4-9-1) kept attacking outshooting Madison County 12-1 in the second half, but Madison County’s goalkeeper Josie Johnson was up to the task racking up 9 saves on direct shots.

One of the Druid Hills opportunities came with 22:34 as a pass by Sidney Cohen to the middle was hit just wide left by Liana Mauer in a crowd.

Johnson would go on to save five more shots the rest of the way including deflecting one just before it went under the bar with 7:10 left and a free kick by Sinkler with 4:58 to play to help stave off the Lady Red Devils for the win.

Madison County (8-6) had only three shots on goal not counting the penalty kick with Sinkler picking up three saves along the way.

In other Class 4A girls action for DeKalb, Arabia Mountain dropped a 12-0 match to No. 1 ranked North Oconee (19-0) to end the Lady Rams (4-9-2) season.
