The Miller Grove Lady Wolverines scored 60 points in the field events and held of superior track performance by Arabia Mountain to claim the 2022 DCSD Junior Varsity Girls County Track and Field Championship 105-100 at Godfrey Stadium on Wednesday.
Miller Grove led by a record setting performance by Jaylen Clark in the shot put and Taniyah Scott in the high jump piled up 60 points in the field events and led Arabia Mountain (16) by 44 points heading into the track events.
Jaylen Clark made her final throw in the shot put a memorable one as she threw for 30 feet-07.25 inches to break the record of 30-05.75 set by Stephenson’s Jamaya Allen just last year. Clark also took third in the discus throw with a toss of 79-10.00 in the event won by Martin Luther King’s Morgan Jones (87-08.00).
Scott set the new mark of 5-feet in the high jump to break the old mark of 4-10.00 set by Miller Grove’s Nasya Gilliam in 2018. She also won the triple jump with a leap of 32-feet-10 inches to capture gold in the triple jump, Scott fell short of the jump trifecta taking silver in the long jump (15-11.00) behind winner Petaune Noteman of Stephenson (16-02.75).
Miller Grove opened the track session with a victory in the 4×800 relay with a record setting time of 11:41.32 while Arabia Mountain picked up four points in fifth.
Arabia Mountain then began to creep back into the race for the title beginning with the 100-meter hurdles. Ava Amey won the event with a time of 17.84, Eternity Newell was third and Dumali Ault was eighth for a 17-point surge.
A victory in the newly included 4×200 relay with a time of 1:51.71 (sets the beginning record) and then the 4×100 relay (51.65) coupled with 14 points in the 400M dash won by Saige Hypolite (1:02.05) pulled the Lady Rams within four points of Miller Grove at 77-73.
Trailing 95 to 80 heading into the 200M dash Hyploite came up big for Arabia again with a victory in 27.09 and Ava Amey finished fifth as the Rams scored 14 points to close within one (95-94) to set up a race for the title in the 4×400 relay to end the night.
Miller Grove’s 4×400 team clinched the championship by taking the race with a time of 4:24.19 with Arabia Mountain a distant third in 4:41.21. Both teams won five events in the meet.
Third place and defending champion Stephenson (85.50) had a pair of gold medal performances with Petaune Noteman winning the long jump (16-02.75) and Taj Hunter tying with Columbia’s Kamri Gilbert in the 100M dash as both crossed in 13.35.
Redan finished fourth with 73 points led by Ceony Jones win in the 800M run with a time of 2:45.79.
Towers had a pair of gold medal winners to finish fifth in the team standings. Macada McDonald took the 300M hurdles gold medal with a time of 50 seconds even and Tracy Yelegoiyee tied Cara McClain of Dunwoody’s record of 6-feet in the pole vault.
Other winners on the day include Dunwoody’s Jenna McJunkin in the 1600M run (6:15.87) and Druid Hills Ben Lipscomb in the 3200 (15:01.54).
