Martin Luther King Jr. and Redan posted perfect records and three other schools enjoyed winning marks in the first week of action in the 2022 season.
Coach Greg Boatwright’s Martin Luther King Jr. Lions rolled past Cedar Grove (10-0) Feb. 14, Towers (4-3) Feb. 15, Columbia (16-1) Feb. 16 and Columbia again (8-2) Feb. 17 by the cumulative score of 38-6 in shooting out of the gates to a stellar 4-0 start.
Coach Alexander Wyche’s Redan Raiders, meanwhile, used a powerful offensive attack to register a 3-0 showing last week. The Raiders took care of Columbia (13-3) Feb. 14, Miller Grove (17-2) Feb. 19 and McNair (16-0) Feb. 19 by the lopsided overall margin of 46-5.
Tucker was equally impressive while rumbling to a 3-1 start. Coach Bobby Link’s Tigers dropped a tough 7-4 decision to Decatur to open the year before bouncing back to knock off Southwest DeKalb (20-3) Feb. 15, Chamblee (11-1) Feb. 18 and Chamblee again (8-7) Feb. 19 to the tune of 39-11.
Southwest DeKalb recovered from the opening game loss to Tucker to register a strong doubleheader sweep Feb. 19 at Mt. Pisgah. Coach Tyrus Taylor’s Panthers defeated host Mt. Pisgah (12-1) and Christian Heritage (8-1) by a 20-2 overall tally.
Senior Sadir Ryan (2-3; 1 RS; 1 2B; 1 SB) and freshman Kyler Wimbish (2-3; 1 RS; 1 RBI; 2 SB) collected two hits each and junior Jarhyl Williams (4 IP; WP; 2 SO) shined on the mound to help Southwest DeKalb roll past Mt. Pisgah by a 12-1 count Feb. 19. Freshman Matthew Evans went 2-4 with two runs scored in Southwest DeKalb’s 8-1 victory over Christian Heritage Feb. 19. Junior Raekwon Wedderburn took the mound triumph with three strikeouts over four scoreless innings.
Towers displayed promising efforts on the mound in all three games while going 2-1. Coach Crystal Savage’s Titans lost a tight 4-3 decision to Martin Luther King Jr. Feb. 15 and then proceeded to post equally exciting wins over Lithonia (2-1) Feb. 16 and Lithonia again (3-2) Feb. 17.
Lakeside received superior pitching from three players in pulling out a 2-1 decision over Midtown Feb. 14. Senior Will Tansill (3 IP; 1 ER; 3 SO; 2 BB), sophomore Jacob Arnberger (WP; 2 IP; 4 SO; 2 BB) and junior Will Berry (2 IP; 4 SO; 1 BB; Save) combined for 11 strikeouts while also teaming up to toss a one-hitter.
