The GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Sectionals get underway today with 103 DeKalb wrestlers representing 15 DCSD wrestling programs vying for a spot in the GHSA Traditional State Tournament next week in Macon.
Seventy-eight of the wrestlers from DeKalb finished first (19), second (33) and third (26) in their respective Area Championships held last weekend.
Southwest DeKalb is sending 12 wrestlers to the Class 5A Sectional-B at the Lakepoint Champions Center in Emerson after capturing the Area 5-5A championship last weekend. Six Panthers won gold at the area competition including Jayden Hammonds (132), Malik Colquitt (145), Dharrin Smith (152), Jerrell Baskins (182), Isaiah Scott (220) and Timothy Hutchins (285).
Stone Mountain also pushed 12 wrestlers into the sectional with their performances at the Area 5-5A Championships led by gold medal winners Dontavious Perry (106), Dwight Kinsey (126), David Allen (170) and Jordan Shannon (195). The Pirates were third overall as a team behind Southwest DeKalb and St. Pius X.
Chamblee (5), Clarkston (5), Lithonia (4) and Martin Luther King (3) added 17 more sectional qualifiers to the list. King’s Amante Huntae (160) won gold at the area meet.
Class 7A
The Dunwoody Wildcats grabbed second place as a team at the Area 7-7A Championships with a pair of gold medal winners and seven wrestlers finishing as their classifications runners-up.
Sam Scothorn (126) and Max Erfani (138) were Dunwoody’s gold medal winners. The Wildcats are sending a DeKalb high of 13 wrestlers to the Class 7A-B Sectional at Discovery High School this weekend.
Class 6A
Lakeside finished third in the Area 4-6A Championships and Tucker was sixth as nine total wrestlers qualified for the Class 6A-B State Sectional at Brunswick High School this weekend.
The Vikings are sending seven wrestlers to Brunswick including gold medal winner Donyai McCalpine (138) along with four silver medalists and one bronze winner. Tucker has two wrestlers moving on led by silver medalist Luke Friedman (126).
Class 4A
Stephenson claimed second place in the team standings in Area 6-4A behind champion Marist with Miller Grove in third.
The Jaguars had no gold medal winners but captured five runner-up finishes and six bronze as 12 total wrestlers advanced to the Class 4A State Sectional-A. Stephenson’s silver medalists included Artavus Hughes (106), Jaden Mitchell (120), Titus Sanders (132), Andre Bernard (145) and Joaquin Rivera (285).
Miller Grove’s third place finish included four gold medal winners on one silver medalist moving on to sectional competition. Chauncey Walton (126), Patrick Clay (152), Roddriqus Tracy (220) and Jeremiah Sandiford (285) all wrestled to the gold medal. Montier Hayes (138) was the silver medalist.
Druid Hills advanced 10 wrestlers to the sectional with seven finishing in the Top three in their weight classes. Robin Gautam (106) topped the list for the Red Devils claiming the only gold medal. Three Red Devils had runner-up finishes and three more were third.
Malik Conley (160) and Langston Blakely (182) led four Arabia Mountain wrestlers to qualify for the sectional as they picked up silver medals at the area meet.
Class 3A
Redan qualified one wrestler for the Class 3A Sectional B at Lumpkin County High School this weekend. David Williams (132) was a bronze medalist in area competition for the Raiders.
Class 2A
Columbia qualified eight wrestlers out of the Area 6-2A Championships to compete this weekend at the Class 2A-A Sectional at Jeff Davis High School.
The Eagles eight wrestlers finished second (3) and third (5) to advance. Thawbaan As-Siddiq (113), Brendan Harris (132) and Jakeim Mack (285) were the silver medalists. Columbia finished third in the team standings for Area 6-2A.
