A three-way flag football triple-header went to the Lakeside Vikings with wins over the Southwest DeKalb Panthers and Miller Grove Wolverines on Wednesday night at “Buck” Godfrey Stadium.
Lakeside and Miller Grove played the nightcap with the Vikings coming out on top 7-4 with a second half touchdown.
Miller Grove led 4-0 at the half on the back of safeties by Janiya McCoy (17:32) and Rasunek Tyler-Thompson (4:22). The pair got sacks in the end zone after Lakeside was backed up inside its six-yard line.
McCoy got the first safety with a sack on Lakeside’s Lily McMahan as the Miller Grove defense had Lakeside backed up to its own six-yard line on the first possession of the game.
Jamia Simmons intercepted a Lakeside pass midway through the first half and gave her team the football needing 35 yards for a score. A fourth and 16 play was stopped six yards short of the goal line and Lakeside took over.
Three plays later Tyler-Thompson sacked Mia Burns in the end zone to give Miller Grove the 4-0 lead going into the half.
Lakeside forced Miller Grove to punt on its first possession of the second half and took seven minutes to drive 25 yards aided by three untimely penalties on Miller Grove. Burns went the final three yards for the touchdown. McMahan ran in the extra point to make it 7-4 with 10:47 to play.
A sack on Miller Grove’s next possession gave Lakeside the football at its own 35 with just 3:42 to play. Lakeside would go on to run out the clock to seal the win.
Game 2
Lakeside 31, SW DeKalb 6
Lily McMahan had four interceptions, including a 25-yard pick-six, to lead Lakeside to a 31-6 win over the Southwest DeKalb Panthers in the second game of the night.
McMahan set up the first score with an interception on the second play of the game giving the ball to Lakeside at the Panthers 13. It took just one play as Mia Burns connected with Stephany Jeronimo for the 17-yard scoring play. Burns ran it in for the 7-0 lead that Lakeside would never relinquish.
Burns would add touchdown runs of three and four yards in the first half to go with McMahan’s 25-yard pick-six as Lakeside took a 25-0 lead into the half.
Celina Burney got the Panthers on the board with 8:38 remaining as she intercepted a pass on the left side and raced down the sideline for a 66-yard pick-six.
Lakeside answered right back taking just two plays to score as Burns and Johnson connected on pass plays of 25 yards and 41 yards (for touchdown) to make the final score of 31-6.
Lakeside improved to 6-4-1 on the season and 3-0 in region play with the two wins.
Game 1
Miller Grove 22, SW DeKalb 0
The Miller Grove Wolverines scored three times in the final 13 minutes of the first half on the way to a 22-0 region win over the Southwest DeKalb Panthers to open the night at “Buck” Godfrey Stadium.
Miller Grove opened the scoring on with a safety at the 12:48 mark to take a 2-0 lead. Following the safety Miller Grove drove the field with the aid of a personal foul and a 16-yard run by Janiya McCoy to set up a three-yard touchdown run by Nefera McCain. Tamia Smith passed to Damya Banks for the conversion and a 9-0 lead with 6:50 left in the first half.
Smith connected with Nekirah Williams on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds left in the first half to go into the break up 15-0.
Smith and Williams hooked up again with 5:26 to play in the game with the touchdown play going 16 yards. Smith hit Banks for the conversion pass for the final of 22-0.
The two teams traded interceptions one by Miller Grove’s Williams and one by Southwest DeKalb’s Celina Burney on the next two possessions. Time ran out on Southwest DeKalb’s final possession as the Panthers were trying to drive at the end of the game.
Miller Grove is now 2-2 overall and 2-2 in region play while Southwest DeKalb fell to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the region.
