After three weeks of play in the DeKalb County middle school football schedule, Cedar Grove Saints and the Salem Lions are the only teams sitting at 3-0 on the season after wins this past weekend.
The Saints moved into first place in Region 4 with a 22-0 win over the Columbia Eagles (0-1) at Avondale Stadium last Saturday. D’Corey Holt was the player of the game for the Saints performing well on both sides of the football. Holt had seven tackles and an interception on defense while added a 65-yard kickoff return and a 55-yard reception for touchdowns in the win.
Salem (3-0, 1-0) shutout Region 3 foe Lithonia 12-0 to set up a showdown for first place with Redan this weekend.
Xavier “Deuce” Butler had a 62-yard pick-six down the left sideline to lead the way in the shutout win for Salem.
William Chaney had three receptions for 126 yards and five tackles in the losing effort for Lithonia. Josias Dore had seven tackles and JaMarius Duncan added six for the Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1)
Redan (1-0) defeated Region 3 rival Miller Grove (2-1) 18-8 to open region play.
The Druid Hills Dragons (1-2, 1-0) kick started their Region 2 schedule with a 34-6 victory over Renfroe (Decatur, 0-2) to move into a first place tie in the standings with the Stephenson Jaguars (2-1, 1-0). Tacory Carroll threw for three touchdowns, two to Djimon McClendon, and ran for a 40-yard score to lead the Dragons in the win.
Stephenson knocked off Champion (1-2, 0-1) 14-0 to get its first Region 2 victory. Champion was coming off a 32-0 win over Bethune in the previous week led by Jacoby Huff with two touchdowns and an interception return. Marcos Moten and Logan Troutman both ran for a touchdown and Demarrian Denard, who had an interception in the season opener, ran in a two-point conversion against Bethune.
Sequoyah (1-2, 1-0) set up a show down with Henderson (1-1, 0-0) for the top of the Region 1 standings by defeating Tucker (0-2, 0-1) 18-0. Marquis Earl had a touchdown, completed eight passes and contributed five tackles on defense to lead Sequoyah. Gustavo Martinez added a touchdown with 50 receiving yards, 2 tackles and an interception as well.
McNair (0-0-1) and Chapel Hill (2-0-1) stifled the opposing offense in the Region 4 opener for both teams battling to an 8-8 tie. Braylen Gilstrap scored Chapel Hill’s touchdown and tacked on the two-point conversion.
