The DeKalb County Middle School Football season go underway last weekend with five teams picking up victories in the renewal after the 2020 season was cancelled.
A smothering defense and a physical ground attack by the Chapel Hill Panthers (1-0) led to a 38-0 victory over Sequoyah (0-1) in non-region action at North DeKalb Stadium on Saturday.
Arron Barber led the Panthers on defense with several sacks and tackles for a loss. The ground game was led by touchdown runs from DJ Bowens (2), Braylon Carter, Braylon Gilstrap, Zyeed Conwell and Harlem Perine. Bowens also added a pick six late in the game as Sederic Johnson’s big hit on the quarterback forced a bad throw.
Miller Grove 6, Druid Hills 2
Defense was the winner as the Miller Grove Wolverines (1-0) knocked off Druid Hills (0-1) 6-2 in a game that had no offensive scores.
Druid Hills picked up a safety as the Wolverines were punting from their own end zone and a bad snap put two points on the board.
Miller Grove scored its winning points via a pick six in the defense dominated game.
Other wins include Cedar Grove (1-0) 16-0 over Champion (0-1), Salem (1-0) 34-0 over Renfroe (0-1) and Stephenson (1-0) 30-0 over Freedom (0-1).
Big region crossover game is set this weekend as Region 2’s Stephenson (1-0) and Region 4’s Cedar Grove (1-0) clash in an effort to get to 2-0 in an 11:30 am game at Godfrey Stadium.
