The McNair Lady Mustangs broke through for a big victory in pool play as part of four teams taking top spots in the 2021 Seventh Annual DeKalb County Spikefest Volleyball Tournament held recently at Miller Grove and Chamblee High Schools.
McNair playing in the Emerald Pool group at Miller Grove opened their run to the title with a two games to none victory over Cross Keys. Coach Gwen Edwards’ Mustangs followed by defeating Cedar Grove and Towers by the same scores to finish atop the pool at 6-0.
Towers was second with a 4-2 mark followed by Cedar Grove 2-4 and Cross Keys 0-6.
The Platinum Pool also played at Miller Grove was won with an exciting come-back by the Redan Raiders. Coach Charlyce Henderson’s Redan squad opened the tournament losing their first two games to host Kevin Rogers and his Miller Grove team.
Redan rallied to win straight set victories against Clarkston, Columbia and Stephenson to finish atop the standings at 6-2. Clarkston, Miller Grove and Stephenson all finished at 5-3 while Columbia a pool winner in the 2019 event went 0-8.
Host Chamblee took the Diamond Pool title with a perfect 8-0 mark. Coach Lorri Reynolds Bulldogs swept Decatur, Druid Hills, Southwest DeKalb and Stone Mountain to claim another Spikefest trophy.
Decatur and Druid Hills both finished with 5-3 marks behind Chamblee. Southwest DeKalb followed at 1-7 and a game Stone Mountain wound up 1-7 on the day.
The Palladium Pool top spot went to Coach Julie Gartner’s Dunwoody Wildcats with an 8-0 mark on the day. Dunwoody opened with a 2-0 win over Lithonia followed by consecutive 2-0 wins over Tucker, Lakeside and Arabia Mountain to earn the trophy.
Lakeside and Arabia Mountain both finished with 5-3 marks on the day followed by Tucker at 2-6 and Lithonia 0-8.
