Towers finished third in the Class 2A Girls State Track and Field Championships to lead a group of five Top 10 finishes for DeKalb schools to wrap up the 2021 track season.
Jamelia Simmons had a remarkable Class 2A state meet scoring 32 of the Lady Titans 46 points to lead them to the third place finish at McEachern High School.
Simmons won the 400-meter dash (57.53) and the 200-meter dash (25.88) to win a pair of gold medals in becoming one of 115 DeKalb track performers to win multiple gold medals at state. She also contributed a pair of third place finishes in the long jump (17 feet, 1 inch) and triple jump (35 feet, 9.5 inches) to add a pair of bronze medals to her collection.
Catherine Forbes was the only other Lady Titan to pick up a medal as she took third in the 200-meter dash (25.99). She finished sixth in the 100 (12.87) and eighth in the triple jump (34 feet, 7.25 inches) to score 10 points for Towers.
Serenity Harry added four points with her fifth place finish in the 100 (12.79).
Class 4A at Albany
Three DeKalb teams battled each other in the Class 4A meet at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany on the way to Top 10 finishes led by Arabia Mountain in fifth.
Arabia scored 45 points and was followed in sixth by Miller Grove (41) and seventh by Druid Hills (39).
The Arabia Mountain Lady Rams kicked started a run to the fifth place finish with a win in the 4×100 relay (48.67) and ended it with a silver medal performance in the 4×400 relay (3:56.36).
Arabia’s Shani Simon grabbed the gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.99 to be the only individual to take a first place finish home for the Lady Rams. Candace Taylor came up just short in the 100-meter hurdles settling for the silver in 15.07.
Miller Grove’s sixth place finish was keyed by a victory in the 300-meter hurdles by Faith Hill as she put up a time of 45.23 for the win. Rasunek Tyler-Thompson picked up a silver in the 100-meter dash (12.14) and Angelica Frederick captured a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash (25.26).
The Lady Wolverines picked up a silver in the 4×100 relay (48.68), just .01 of a second behind Arabia Mountain with Druid Hills making it a medal sweep by DeKalb in third just .08 behind Arabia.
Druid Hills was led in its seventh place finish by Sanaa Frederick who took a silver in the 200 (25.09) and bronze in the 100 (12.19). Harley Martz scored a bronze medal in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:10.50 and finished fifth in both the 1600 (5:10.49) and the 800 (2:22.06).
Class 5A at Carrollton
The Chamblee Lady Bulldogs had the final Top 10 finish of the 2021 track season taking ninth in the Class 5A Track and Field State Championships at Carrollton.
Chamblee put together 28 points led by Ariel Raggs bronze medal in the 300-meter hurdles (43.27). Raggs added a sixth in the high jump (5 feet) and a seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (15.73) to contribute a total of 11 points to the cause.
Solai Washington had a fourth place finish in the 100 (12.41) and Kenedi Bates took fourth in the 400 (58.22).
Class 7A at McEachern
Janae Profit’s two gold medals led the way for the Dunwoody Wildcats as they finished just six points out of the Top 10 in the Class 7A State Track and Field Championships at McEachern.
Profit set a new state record in the shot put with her toss of 47-feet, 11-inches to take gold in the event. It was the 21st time a DeKalb girl set a state record at state.
She followed up with a gold in the discus to sweep the throwing events with her toss of 151-feet, 2-inches.
Class 6A at Carrollton
Tucker’s Mallory Hodge scored all six of the Lady Tigers’ points as Tucker finished in a tie for 29th at the Class 6A State Track and Field Championships at Carrollton.
Hodge took fifth in the 200-meter dash (24.71) and seventh in the 100 (12.23) to round out the tally.
