After rain delayed some events in the DeKalb County Track and Field Championships on Wednesday evening, the Dunwoody Wildcats and Lady Wildcats were atop the standings heading into Friday’s finals at Buck Godfrey Stadium.
The Lady Wildcats lead Chamblee 54 to 37 after six events behind Janae Profit’s record setting day in the field events.
Profit set a pair of records in winning both the shot put and the discus. She had a toss of 44 feet, 7 inches in the shot put to break the record of 41-04 held by Columbia’s Lesheal Johnson (1994) and Southwest DeKalb’s Kenya Wheeler (2013).
She followed that up by topping Johnson’s 1994 record throw in the discus of 144 feet, 5.5 inches with a heave of 146 feet, 5 inches to become a two-time record holder in the DCSD Championships.
Claire Shelton contributed another 10 points to the Dunwoody cause as she took the 1600-meter run gold with a time of 5:13.97.
Clara Silvestri aided the Chamblee cause by taking the gold in the pole vault with a record tying vault of 9 feet, 6 inches. She tied the mark set by Lakeside’s Carla LaRotta in 2011.
Other gold medal winners in girls’ action on Wednesday included Arabia Mountain’s Candace Taylor taking the long jump gold with a leap of 17 feet, 11 inches and Cedar Grove’s Lelah Easterly going 4 feet, 10 inches to take the high jump gold medal.
In the boys’ competition, Dunwoody swept the medal stand in the pole vault to lead Chamblee 48-34. Alon Rogow led the way in the event taking gold with a record setting vault of 15 feet, 6 inches. He broke the mark of 14 feet, 7 inches set by Lakeside’s Jeff Jernigan in 2013. He was followed by teammates Harrison Kopp (14-04) and Jack Arant (13-06).
Chamblee’s Stephen Campana led the Bulldogs surge to second with a win in the discus (155 feet, 4.5 inches) and a second place in the shot put (48-06) behind Stone Mountain’s Henry Kofowo (51-04).
Decatur picked up 20 points of its 31 points with wins in the 3200-meter run by Christian Gonzalez (9:33.77) and the 4×800-meter relay (8:05.07) good for fourth.
Other gold medal winners on Wednesday included Martin Luther King Jr.’s Marco Hill in the triple jump (44-08.50) and Daeshaun Logan of Towers in the high jump (6-02.00).
