Following the cancellation of the 2020 DeKalb County School District (DCSD) County Gymnastics Championships Dunwoody returns to host the 65th annual version beginning at 6:00 pm Tuesday (tonight) in the Dunwoody High Gym.
Eight schools are participating this season including Arabia Mountain, Chamblee, Druid Hills, Dunwoody, Lakeside, Lithonia, Southwest DeKalb and Stephenson with participants set to compete for the individual event titles, overall title and team championship.
Lakeside won the 64th annual in 2019 for a record 22 titles among DeKalb schools. It was Lakeside’s third win in four seasons including the 2016 and 2017 titles. Druid Hills, the 2019 runner-up, won its first and only title in 2018 to keep the Vikings from a four-year streak.
Lakeside senior Emma Cohen returns after finishing second in the All-Around in 2019 including a gold medal in the floor exercise (9.90), silver on balance beam, tie for silver on the uneven parallel bars and a tie fourth in the vault.
Junior teammate Taylor Smith won a bronze in the vault and finished fourth on the uneven parallel bars in the 2019 championships.
Chamblee senior Dorothy Boise and Southwest DeKalb Kyla Jackson are the only other returning Top 10 finalists in the 2019 All-Around finishing sixth (30.15) and ninth (29.15), respectively.
Boise finished ninth in both the balance beam (7.350) and the floor exercise (8.000). Jackson’s best finish was a tie for seventh in the vault (8.000) to go with 10th place finishes in the balance beam (7.150) and uneven parallel bars (7.200).
