The Discovery Titans defense and pressure offense kept the Dunwoody Wildcats off balance all night on the way to a 2-0 victory and a split of the Region 7-7A series at North DeKalb on Tuesday.
Dunwoody (6-6-2, 4-4) needed a win to aid their playoff hopes and a second victory over Discovery would have enhanced their position heading into the last part of the season.
The Wildcats came out quickly moving against Discovery’s defense and goalie Diego Sanchez-Carapia. Dunwoody got deep in the offensive end and in a congested box in front of the goal got off a pair of shots that Sanchez-Carapia managed to keep out of the goal.
Unfortunately for Dunwoody Discovery’s Sterling Tamakloe put the ball in the net from the right side at the 34:33 mark to give the Titan’s a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish.
Dunwoody missed a few more opportunities as Sanchez-Carapia had three saves and a header by Josh Hitt (22:32) and a breakaway shot by Jared Villanueva (2:42) was just wide right of the right-hand post.
Thomas Odom managed to keep the game within the one goal with two big saves with under a minute to play in the first half.
Discovery kept the pressure on in the second half, but Odom picked off three of the Titans’ shots in the first 19 minutes.
Meanwhile the Dunwoody offense was having trouble getting a shot off on the other end as the Titans’ defense formed a tough bubble around their goalie.
Discovery’s Anderson Mercado got into the left corner with the ball and lofted a pass towards teammate Reynaldo Martinez just out front of the goal. Martinez went up and hit a hard header into the net to give Discovery (9-4-0, 8-2) the 2-0 advantage.
Dunwoody never got a solid shot on goal the rest of the way and Odom had to make a diving save with 1:02 to play to keep the final score at 2-0.
