Chamblee senior Mary Adam headlines 36 DeKalb swimmers earning Georgia High School Swim Coaches Association All-State honors in their respective classes being voted the GHSSCA Class 4A-5A Swimmer of the Year for 2021.
Adam won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.80) to claim gold in the event after finishing third in 2020. She teamed up with Kyla Maloney, Evelyn Entrekin and Anna Blankenship to bring another gold medal home to Chamblee with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:46.93).
Maloney, Entrekin, Blankenship and Catherine Smart also struck gold winning the 400 freestyle relay (3:35.24). Maloney captured gold for the second time in two years in the 100 backstroke (54.85) while Entrekin brought home a silver in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.49) as runner-up to Adam.
The Chamblee coaching staff of Lorri Reynolds and Greg Valley were also voted as the Class 4A-5A Girls Coaching Staff of the Year.
Dunwoody’s Aiden Chen earned First Team Class 7A Boys All-State honors with a silver medal finish in the 100 breaststroke (56.80). He also got Honorable Mention in the 200 individual medley (1:55.43, 7th).
Twenty other DeKalb swimmers earned via third or fourth place finishes in their individual state meets.
Lakeside’s Isabelle Jones led the way with two individual silver medal finishes in the Class 6A girls 50 freestyle (24.10) and 100 freestyle (53.25). She teamed with Sophia Hook, Phoebe Mansker and Katelyn McClintock to take third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.48).
The Lakeside boys 200 medley relay team of Chris Decker, Zachery Zhao, Jack Van Valkenburg and Craig Steinhauer took bronze with a time of 1:34.30 to earn All-State honors. Zhao also claimed a bronze in the 100 breaststroke (56.68).
Other second team honors included six Chamblee swimmers in the Class 4A-5A boys’ competition. Micah Neely in diving (432.15) and Thomas Rice in the 500 freestyle (4:54.07) took individual fourth place finishes. James Hardy, jay Krueger, Jonah Bosselmann and Pierce McDonald teamed up for a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.62).
Lakeside’s Matthew Karpen, Zachery Zhao, Craig Steinhauer and Jack Van Valkenburg claimed fourth in the Class 6A boys’ 400 freestyle relay (3:10.12).
Tucker’s Jared Bruce picked up Second Team Class 6A honors with this fourth place finish in the 11 backstroke (50.88).
Nine others earned Third Team or Honorable Mention honors.
