The Druid Hills Red Devils scored twice in the final 13 minutes to take down No. 10 ranked Benedictine 2-0 in high school boys soccer action at Adams Stadium on Friday night.
First half action included some aggressive runs at goal by the Red Devils (3-5) only to com up empty as Benedictine goalie Quincy Howard made four saves in the first half. Druid Hills also had shots hit the crossbar, go over the goal, miss just left and just right along the way to a scoreless first half.
Benedictine had one solid shot on goal with 26 minutes left in the first half, but goalie Grant Hottel made the play on a header to keep the score tied.
Benedictine came out more aggressive early in the second half putting Hottel to the test with him coming up three saves in the first 17 minutes as the teams continued to battle in a scoreless game.
Druid Hills had a goal disallowed for offsides with 18:30 to play and Benedictine got a shot on a free kick when Hottel was called for being out of the goalie box while catching the ball.
Benedictine’s Carter Smith line up for the free kick from about 15 yards directly in front of the goal. His kick was turned away by the Druid Hills wall in front of the goal and the game would remain scoreless for just one minute and 19 seconds more.
Benedictine (3-4-1) was pressing to keep pressure on Druid Hills in the Cadets offensive end of the field. Druid Hills cleared the ball down the field where Dani Bibiano raced up the left wing. He found teammate Alex Sabino racing up the right side with a crossing pass that Howard could not adjust quickly enough to as Sabino put the ball in the net for a 1-0 Red Devils lead with 12:44 to play.
Another breakaway came for the Red Devils as the game clock ticked under a minute. Sabino repaid the favor to Bibiano with a pass he was able to direct to Howard’s right as he came out. The kick rolled toward the goal with a Benedictine defender in pursuit, but it had enough momentum to beat him to the goal to make it 2-0 with 55 seconds to play.
