Fifty DeKalb County School District wrestlers qualified out of the Traditional Area Tournament to compete in this week’s GHSA Traditional State Championships at the Centreplex in Macon.
Southwest DeKalb won the Area 5-5A title while qualifying 13 wrestlers for the Class 5A State Championships with 185 points to outpace St. Pius (154), Stone Mountain (84), Chamblee (14), Northview (12) and Lithonia (7).
The Panthers captured gold in 10 of the 14 weight classes at the Area Championships including Cameron Allen (106), Jeunte McCray (113), Jayden Hammonds (120), Alex Dunton (132), Dharrin Smith (152), Hunter Muse 9160) Darrion Finley (170), Jerrel Baskins 9182), Jimmy Hutchins (195) and Isaiah Scott (220).
Stone Mountain qualified eight for state including gold medal winners Amantee Mills (126) and Jaheim Mills (145). Chamblee put one wrestler into the state meet as Gavin Sapp (138) took silver in his weight class.
Dunwoody finished second overall with 170.5 points in Area 7-7A to Archer’s 241.5 while qualifying 10 wrestlers for the Class 7A State Championships. Four of the Wildcats picked up gold medals at the area meet including Ben Tarrago (132), Ahmed Hooper (138), Joe Dubsky (152) and Tyler Rush (195).
Miller Grove (93) finished runner-up to Marist (174) in the Area 6-4A Championships with Arabia Mountain (61) third.
The Wolverines picked up eight state qualifiers led by gold medal winners James Terrell (160) and Ethan Brydson (285). Arabia Mountain had three gold medal winners at area while qualifying four wrestlers for the Class 4A State Championships. The Rams first place finishers were Langston Blakely (170), Brandon White (195) and Kalvin Johnson (220).
Redan’s David Williams (120) qualified for the Class AAA State Championships with his bronze medal performance at the Area 4-3A Championships.
Five girls’ qualified for the GHSA Girls’ State Championships as Stone Mountain and Southwest DeKalb put two each into state and Arabia Mountain one. Armani Mills (102) and Daisy Gilleylen (132) made it from Stone Mountain, Zariea Muse and Ayla Evans from Southwest DeKalb and Alana Scott of Arabia Mountain.
