Late free throws helped the Lakeside Vikings repulse a late rally by the Chamblee Bulldogs for a 53-45 non-region win to complete a Lakeside sweep in high school basketball at Chamblee on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (0-3) had trailed by 14 points twice in the third quarter when Will Mepham scored 10 points in the first five-plus minutes of the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer with 2:10 to play to trim the lead to 46-42.
Jackson Lowe’s tip-in with 1:12 remaining extended the lead to six at 48-42 to set up the free throws down the stretch. The Vikings (2-4) would hit four of five in the final 43 seconds of the game as Lowe and Will Thomas hit two each.
The Bulldogs missed three opportunities at the line with only a three-pointer by Bryson Fleming with 15 seconds left to round out their scoring.
Chamblee grabbed the lead at the end of the first quarter as Mepham was fouled on a put back and tacked on the free throw to give his team an 11-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
Lakeside jumped out quickly in the second quarter going on a 10-0 run started by Virgil Bright who was fed along the baseline by Lowe to tie game.
Thomas sandwiched another Virgil basket with a pair of three-pointers to propel the Vikings to a 19-11 advantage. Chamblee’s Douglas Liggion helped close the gap to 30-21 with a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter, including one with four seconds left in the half.
Lowe had four layups in the third quarter giving the Vikings a 14-point advantage twice in the period including a basket on an assist from Bright with 2:01 left to make it 40-26.
Ted Tzavaras hit a three-pointer and Matthew McMillan hit a layup in the final seconds of third period to complete a 6-0 run to pull Chamblee within 40-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
Jackson Lowe finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lakeside with teammate Virgil Bright adding 11 points and 9 rebounds and Will Thomas accounting for 10 points.
Will Mepham scored 19 points and added six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.
(G) Lakeside 54, Chamblee 38
Lakeside took advantage of 34 Chamblee turnovers to open the afternoon’s games with a 54-38 victory at Chamblee.
Diamond Jackson had four points and Syloil Thomas’ layup with 2:32 left in the first quarter aided a 12-4 lead for the Lady Vikings. Chamblee got a layup by Faith Brown and two free throws by Trinity Walls in the final 1:44 to cut the lead to 14-8 going into the second quarter.
Adia Bouldin hit two three-pointers and Jackson added a three and two more baskets as Lakeside extended its lead to 37-15 with 1:01 left in the first half.
Chamblee got baskets by Jessica and Kristina Perez in the final 43 seconds of the first half to close the gap to 37-19.
Both teams struggled with turnovers in the third quarter with Lakeside hitting just one basket (by Bouldin) and going just six of 12 from the free-throw line. Chamblee got a three-pointer by Jessica Perez and a pair of baskets by Alana Azeta but still trailed 45-39 as the third quarter came to a close.
Walls had a layup and three-pointer back-to-back in a six-second span to cut the lead to 47-34, but Chamblee would go five minutes without a basket as the turnovers limited opportunities to cut into the Lakeside lead.
Marileysis Wade led Lakeside (3-1) with 18 points and 8 rebounds with Diamond Jackson putting up 16 points and 8 boards and teammate Adia Bouldin adding 11 points.
Chamblee (1-5) was led by Trinity Walls with eight points while Kristina Perez added five points and seven rebounds, Jessica Perez five points and six rebounds, Alana Azeta six points and Lily McCord six points.
