Placing three runners in the Top 10 aided the Clarkston Angoras on the way to repeating as the DeKalb County Schools Boys’ Cross County champs on Tuesday at Arabia Mountain.
The Angoras won 46-66 over second place Lakeside followed by Druid Hills (86), Dunwoody (99), Tucker (105), Southwest DeKalb (137), Chamblee (146) and Cedar Grove (248).
Freshman Abenezer Woellore, last year’s JV County Champ, was the first of the three Top 10 finishers for the Angoras coming across in third (18:17.60) behind individual champ Yordanos Ephram (18:06.20) of Tucker and Druid Hills’ Sage Walker (18:13.90).
Lakeside’s Adam Grisch (18:23.70) was the first of two Top 10 runners taking fourth before the Clarkston duo of Thadde Barge (18:31.80) and Ilyas Abdi Nur (18:34.40) crossed in fifth and sixth,
respectively. The Vikings grabbed the final Top 10 spot on the legs of Brandon Rutland (19:06.30).
Clarkston’s fourth finished was Dejene Abatie (19:28.00) in 12th, but Lakeside closed the gap as Matthew Burn (19:34.00) and Evan Leahy (19:48.30) came in back-to-back at 15th and 16th.
Clarkston’s Innocent Mfitumukize (20.19.40) clinched the title with his 20th place finish ahead of Lakeside’s Grant Webb (20:24.60) who was 21st.
Fourth place Dunwoody picked up a pair of Top 10 finishes as Ethan Archibald (18:49.60) was seventh followed by teammate Michael Mendonca (18:50.10) in eighth.
Southwest DeKalb’s John Farmer (19:05.60) was ninth overall.
The title was Clarkston’s fifth in the last eight seasons (2013, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2020). The Angoras are the only team to knock off Lakeside (21 titles since 1995 and 32 overall) since Southwest DeKalb’s 1994 squad won the title.
Jennifer Rickard picks up her first title as Clarkston’s head coach taking over for the departed Wesley Etienne who won the previous four titles and three state titles (2014-16).
