Coach Derek Vaughn picked up his first win as the Head Coach at Redan as his Raiders put up four defensive touchdowns on the way to a 62-0 shutout of the Druid Hills Red Devils on Thursday night at Avondale Stadium.

The Raiders offense picked up the first score of the night with a three-play, 55-yard drive on the opening possession of the game as Antoine Hector connected in the right corner of the end zone with Yteace Chapman on an 11-yard scoring pass for an early 6-0 lead. It was set up by a 44-yard run by Votarres Thaxton.

Druid Hills first possession ended badly as a snap over the head of quarterback Mark Hayes was recovered in the end zone by Redan’s Angel Massas for the first of the four defensive scores in the game. The two-point attempt was again no good for a 12-0 Redan lead with 10:32 to play in the first quarter.

Redan got the football back on a as they recovered a muffed kickoff by the Red Devils and Hector connected with Ali McDaniel for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 9:26 to play. Thaxton ran in the two-point conversion to make it 20-0.

Chicago Jones got the first of his two defensive scores with 8:08 left in the first quarter as he recovered another bad snap in the end zone. The two-point pass was good to make it 28-0 in favor of the Raiders.

Redan forced a punt from the Druid Hills 20 that was returned to the Red Devils 27. Hector ran for 23 yards and two plays later Thaxton ran it in from four yards out. A two-pass was good for a 36-0 lead with 6:03 left in the first quarter.

Defensive lineman Amir Callender finished the first half scoring with a fumble recovery in the end zone to make it 42-0 at the half.

Druid Hills’ Silvestre Cortez intercepted a pass at the Druid Hills five-yard line and returned it to the 24 to end another Redan threat late in the half.

Ralph Green threw a screen pass to Jammeel Jones who carried it 34 yards for a touchdown on the Raiders first possession of the second half to push the lead to 50-0. Green added the two-point run.

Xavier Green added a five-yard touchdown run and Chicago Jones returned a fumble 26 yards for a touchdown to round out the scoring for the final of 62-0.

Votarres Thaxton rushed seven times for 135 yards and touchdown to lead the Raiders offense. Redan’s defense held Druid Hills without a first down in the game.

Stephenson 25, Lithonia 0
The Class 4A No. 4 ranked Stephenson Jaguars opened the year with a 25-0 win over the Lithonia Bulldogs at Hallford Stadium on Thursday night.

Quashaun Johnson gave the Jaguars a 7-0 lead with 2:31 left in the first quarter on a five-yard touchdown run set up by Marcus Abney fumble recovery.

The score remained 7-0 at half in a tough defensive battle before Stephenson would pull away with 18 second half points.

A field goal and a three-yard fumble return by Trenton Smith put the Jaguars (1-0) up 16-0 in the third quarter. Smith set up another Jaguars’ score with an interception that led to a 22-yard touchdown run by Johnson to make it 23-0 with 4:10 to play.

A bad snap through the end zone gave the Jaguars a safety for the final of 25-0.

In other action on the road, the McNair Mustangs (0-1) fell 55-0 to the Pace Knights in a Region 6-2A opener.

Twelve DeKalb teams get their first action of the season on Friday night.
